For all of its whimsy and low-stakes action, Beyond Paradise\u2019s first season wasn\u2019t afraid to tackle some weighty issues, one of which was Martha and Humphrey\u2019s IVF journey.<\/p>\n

\n

Sally Bretton\u2019s character suffered a miscarriage<\/a> in the first episode following multiple attempts to get pregnant.<\/p>\n

But while the detective wanted to try again, Martha decided that she was no longer willing to put her physical and emotional wellbeing at risk \u2013 and made the painful decision to stop<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That caused a rift to open up between them, with Martha calling off their engagement and Humphrey making enquiries about returning to London.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t marry you like that,\u201d she said. \u201cHow can I ever believe you\u2019re happy, that you won\u2019t come to resent me? This will always eat away at us. I can\u2019t do it to you, and I can\u2019t do it to myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
