Doctor Who<\/a> has officially entered a new era with Ncuti Gatawa\u2019s<\/a> Fifteenth Doctor taking charge of the TARDIS<\/a> alongside companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson<\/a> \u2013 and with a new era comes a new mystery.<\/p>\n The Christmas special<\/a>, which introduced Ruby and her adoptive mother Carla (Michelle Greenidge<\/a>), opens with Ruby looking for her biological parents with a little help from none other than Davina McCall<\/a>.<\/p>\n Later on in the episode, Ruby gets bad news about her search for her parents \u2013 but it seems the mystery doesn\u2019t end there.<\/p>\n In fact, speaking at the premiere of The Church on Ruby Road<\/a>, showrunner Russell T Davies<\/a> said: \u201cThis one\u2019s quite a fable \u2013 the foundling on the church doorstep in the snow. That story then continues into the series \u2013 we come back to that church. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s all sorts of things\u2026 there were people in those scenes you don\u2019t know were there. There\u2019s a lot more to come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Of course, Ruby\u2019s adoptive mother Carla is played by the great Michelle Greenidge. Recently speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Greenidge said: \u201cCarla\u2019s bond with Ruby is very special, and there isn\u2019t anything Carla wouldn\u2019t do for Ruby.\u201d<\/p>\n So how about Ruby\u2019s biological mother? The only clues we have in the episode are a brief sighting of a hooded figure when the Doctor goes back in time to the Church, and an intriguing update from Davina when she phones Ruby with the results of her search.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s no trace of your mum or dad. I\u2019m sorry, it happens sometimes,\u201d Davina says. \u201cIf your parents aren\u2019t on some kind of database, we can\u2019t find them.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIsn\u2019t that unusual though?\u201d Ruby asks. \u201cThat there\u2019s not a single trace anywhere? Meaning in the whole wide world, my mother\u2019s never left a blood sample or anything?\u201d<\/p> Of course, there\u2019s not much to go on at the moment but the mystery of it might suggest Ruby\u2019s mother is a character we already know in the Whoniverse. Perhaps it\u2019s someone who\u2019s spent some time away from Earth, meaning they\u2019re not on any databases.<\/p>\n After all, it wouldn\u2019t be the first time in Doctor Who history that grand revelations have been made about a character\u2019s parentage \u2013 lest we forget the great River Song\/Melody Pond<\/a> reveal of 2011.<\/p>\n Perhaps Ruby\u2019s mother is another past companion or someone the Doctor has known well over the years? That could explain why the Doctor and Ruby kept being drawn to each other at The Church on Ruby Road.<\/p>\n Elsewhere in the episode, it\u2019s made clear that there\u2019s more to Ruby\u2019s neighbour Mrs Flood (Anita Dobson)<\/a> than meets the eye, and she seems particularly fond of Ruby.
