Bates and his partner Suzanne Sercombe, who is played by Julie Hesmondhalgh in the ITV drama<\/a>, appeared on today\u2019s episode of This Morning, where they were asked about Sunak\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n Bates said: \u201cI only heard them second hand, but he really needs to ensure things happen now and they happen at real speed \u2013 not just at pace, which he has commented on recently.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s no reason these things can\u2019t be sorted quickly if enough pressure is brought to bear and it\u2019s the compensation of the original people that fought the court case that needs resolving now. It\u2019s been going on for almost 20 years for a number of these people and they\u2019ve got to be able to get on with their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Sercombe added: \u201cI\u2019m very disheartened personally that [Rishi Sunak] seems to be talking about it as something that\u2019s just from the past \u2013 the carry-over, the fallout is horrendous and it\u2019s been going on for years.\u201d<\/p>\n Bates said that he would be \u201cinterested to hear what comes out of\u201d government discussions surrounding the overturning of any criminal convictions, and said that it should \u201cjust get on with\u201d paying out compensation to victims.<\/p>\n \u201cStop holding it up with bureaucracy and just get it done,\u201d Bates added. \u201cThey know what needs to happen, let\u2019s see if they can actually do it.\u201d<\/p> Bates also spoke about the reaction to the drama, which rated highly in terms of overnight viewership<\/a> and resonated strongly with viewers.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cWe\u2019re really pleased with it. It has been going, as you say, for over 20 years and it has from time to time been picked up in the media but all of a sudden, the drama has made a huge, huge difference.<\/p>\n \u201cThe drama does such a good job of exposing the suffering that people have been through.
