The ITV drama opened with a bang. <\/p>

The opening episode of ITV drama After the Flood<\/a> \u2013 and indeed its very first scene \u2013 throws PC Jo Marshall (Sophie Rundle) and her colleagues right into the eye of the storm, literally, when a baby\u2019s life is hanging in the balance.<\/p>\n

The banks of the river which runs through their tight-knit Yorkshire community have burst, and if they don\u2019t act fast, the infant will drown.<\/p>\n

But thankfully, Jo manages to save the day with the help of Jonas Armstrong\u2019s mystery character, who\u2019s laying low despite being a hero, which instantly raises questions about his link to the body in the lift.<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Rundle said that she \u201choped\u201d she would be hurling herself into water when she signed up for the role.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think most people involved in this, the crew and us playing the characters, that\u2019s the reason we wanted to do it,\u201d she continued. \u201cBecause you read it and you\u2019re like \u2018who\u2019s making this? ITV? How do you deal with that? How do you film that?\u2019 So we were all really intrigued by how the f**k we were going to do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they really did just chuck us in. It was so fun, and fun to do something really different. And the adrenaline was up, it was exciting. So yeah, I did enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rundle previously said that as an actor who has \u201cworn a lot of corsets and [done] a lot of holding babies and mooning after someone in the background\u201d, it was refreshing to be asked to take on such a physical challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo be doing the stunt and not just witnessing it was so exciting,\u201d she added. <\/span>\u201cI think it is so clever [to introduce the protagonist in that way]. This is the world. These are the stakes. Here she is. She\u2019s in the water. She\u2019s saved the baby and she\u2019s pregnant. Boom. You\u2019re in. How could you not watch that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As for how they filmed that scene, the cast and crew pitched up at Tees Barrage White Water Centre <\/span>in Stockton-on-Tees for the week.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s where they train all the emergency services,\u201d said Rundle. \u201cThere\u2019s this water course and they have control of the speed and the scale of the water. They had all these big strapping six-foot lifeguards in all their emergency gear stationed along the water course who were lovely. They said, \u2018If you fall the water is going to take you but don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re going to save you.\u2019 <\/span>Luckily, I didn\u2019t ever stack it, so they didn\u2019t have to save me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She added: \u201cThe water was really strong, and we were in and out of it all the time. On the last day I realised my hand was shaking because I hadn\u2019t eaten anything. I was so pumped. It wasn\u2019t a normal day at work where you do your lines and you go home. It really made the job for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
