Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss have explained why they aren\u2019t involved in House of the Dragon<\/a> \u2013 and revealed they haven\u2019t watched the spin-off yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benioff and Weiss created the original fantasy show for HBO<\/a>, which was based on George RR Martin\u2019s epic <\/span>Song of Ice and Fire book series<\/span>, and served as showrunners for all eight seasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, they didn\u2019t return for the prequel series <\/span>House of the Dragon<\/span>, which is based on Martin\u2019s novel <\/span>Fire & Blood,<\/span> and was created for HBO by the author alongside Ryan Condal.<\/span><\/p>\n

And now, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Benioff and Weiss have spoken about why they aren\u2019t connected to the prequel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talking about how they were <\/span>contractually guaranteed producer credits<\/span> on all properties within the Game of Thrones on-screen universe, but turned them down because they didn\u2019t want their names connected to a project they weren\u2019t actively involved in, Benioff said: \u201cHBO was kind of confused.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember their lawyer saying, \u2018But it\u2019s just money, we\u2019re just going to pay you.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Weiss continued: \u201cI don\u2019t think there is such a thing as free money.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, if our name is on it, especially that, while being completely detached and uninvolved, it felt like the strain that would come with that hands-off approach \u2013 with its success or failure or anything in between \u2013 was not worth it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The pair also revealed that neither has watched House of the Dragon and that, while Weiss recently revisited Game of Thrones with his family, Benioff hasn\u2019t rewatched a single episode since the show aired its conclusion.<\/span><\/p>

Game of Thrones fans will remember that the show had a very controversial finale<\/a>, with the final six episodes failing to live up to some fans\u2019 expectations, many of whom complained of rushed storytelling and confusing character choices.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking about season 8, Benioff said: \u201c<\/span>You always hope everyone\u2019s going to love anything you do and it would\u2019ve been great if 100\u202fper cent of people loved it, but they didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cYou can get so bogged down in public opinion that you spend your whole life googling things and trying to find people who felt one way or the other way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>
