The actor has a lead role in George Clooney’s new film The Boys in the Boat, which has just arrived in UK cinemas. <\/p>
Callum Turner takes on a lead role in George Clooney\u2019s latest film The Boys in the Boat<\/a> \u2013 and the Masters of the Air<\/a> star has revealed that it sees him fulfil a long-held ambition of starring in a sports film.<\/p>\n The movie tells the true story of how the University of Washington rowing team defied the odds to win Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, with The Capture actor Turner taking on the key role of rower Joe Rantz.<\/p>\n \u201cWe all love a sports movie and an underdog story,\u201d he explained. \u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to do a sports movie. I was 31 when I got the part and I was running out of time, I was running out of sports to play!\u201d<\/p> He went on to detail the gruelling preparation which saw him train with his co-stars for five months to learn how to row \u2013 explaining that everything finally clicked for him around three and a half months into the process.<\/p>\n \u201cWe trained for five months,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd two months of that was just strictly rowing four hours a day, losing weight, you know, being part of a team.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s the closest experience you\u2019ll ever have to being part of a sports team, truly a wonderful experience. And I love playing sports and exercising and I just thrived and I adored it. And we really built a bond!\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile Grant Heslov \u2013 Clooney\u2019s long-term producing partner \u2013 also talked about the intensive process that the cast went through, revealing that there were moments when he was concerned if they would ever manage to reach a good enough standard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThey\u2019d row in the morning, and then they\u2019d work out during the day, and then they\u2019d row again in the late day or early evening,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you know, it took a while for us to see that they were actually going to be able to do it \u2013 we were worried!\u201d<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n Thankfully they eventually managed, and Joel Edgerton \u2013 who plays the team\u2019s coach Al Ulbrickson in the film \u2013 explained how he was \u201creally inspired\u201d watching the crew work together.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re meant to operate in unison,\u201d he said. \u201cIn slightly different ways, but essentially in sync. And watching the development of that and watching how that developed the camaraderie that then spills into the scenes on screen that are outside the boat and how they all treat each other with respect\u2026 I found it very inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n The Boys in the Boat is now showing in UK cinemas.
