Ruby Speaking co-creator and star Jayde Adams has promised \u201cphenomenal\u201d plans for Mr Bates vs the Post Office<\/a> star Katherine Kelly, if the sitcom is renewed for a second season.<\/p>\n

The series is set in a call centre in Bristol, where chatterbox Ruby (Adams) struggles to adapt to the corporate, commercial working style advocated by no-nonsense boss, Vicky (Kelly).<\/p>\n

Ruby Speaking<\/a> features a large ensemble cast, with Adams telling RadioTimes.com<\/a> that their goal was to show a wide range of experiences and \u201cthrow the ladder down\u201d to new talent (such as co-star Daniel Hiscox, making his screen debut).<\/p>\n

However, for the complex role of boss Vicky, a more established name was sought, with Kelly quickly wowing the creative team with her in-depth research and clear vision for the character.<\/p>

\u201cWe approached quite a few people that we thought would be really good for that role,\u201d recalled Adams. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect Katherine Kelly to come in and have done loads of research into it, but she understood Vicky\u2019s nuances and didn\u2019t immediately come in and say \u2018she\u2019s the villain of the piece\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s another thing that\u2019s really important to us is that there\u2019s no villains\u2026 Vicky\u2019s just vulnerable. And she manages to teeter on that edge really beautifully. And that\u2019s because she has so much experience in drama.<\/p>\n

Adams continued: \u201cI think a lot of people were surprised that I didn\u2019t just book a load of stand-up comics that can act and put them in the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to have actors in it because all of those subjects that we want to talk about, they have to be done with the experience that someone like Katherine Kelly\u2019s got.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ruby Speaking made its initial debut on ITVX in the summer of last year, but is now heading to terrestrial television for its formal premiere, taking a coveted post-Love Island<\/a> slot on ITV2.<\/p>\n
