Viewers have been hooked on Percy Jackson and the Olympians<\/a>, the Disney Plus<\/a> series based on Rick Riordan\u2019s beloved fantasy novels<\/a> \u2013 but episode 6<\/a> has proven quite a surprise for fans of the books.<\/p>\n The episode, titled We Take a Zebra to Vegas, sees the trio take a trip to the Lotus Casino alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/a>\u2018s Hermes \u2013 with some mind-bending consequences.<\/p>\n After they make it out, they\u2019re transported to Santa Monica, where Percy (Walker Scobell) goes to see his father \u2013 but, instead, he\u2019s encountered with a Naiad, who reveals that the summer solstice deadline given for Percy to retrieve the lightning bolt has passed.<\/p>\n The Naiad tells him: \u201cSorry, he waited as long as he could. The summer solstice passed earlier this evening. Zeus\u2019s deadline has elapsed. Your father has gone to marshal his forces and prepare for war.<\/p>\n \u201cHe asked that I relay a message \u2013 this is not your fault. You\u2019re brave, you\u2019re strong, you made your father proud. Now, it\u2019s time for you to return to Camp.\u201d<\/p> Fans will remember that never happened in the books \u2013 in The Lightning Thief, Percy successfully retrieved the bolt by the deadline given. So\u2026 what happens now he\u2019s failed?<\/p>\n It\u2019s not the only change from the books, either. At the end of the episode, after he pleads for the Naiad\u2019s help in stopping Hades, Percy is given four pearls, each of them designed to safely guide a person back from the Underworld.<\/p>\n Percy\u2019s surprised to receive four of them (considering there are only three of them on the quest). Fans were surprised too, as in the book, he\u2019s only given three.<\/p>\n The Naiad explains: \u201cSave the world and then go save your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n Fans have expressed their shock on social media, with one writing on X<\/a> (formerly known as Twitter): \u201cSUMMER SOLSTICE<\/span> PASSED???? THAT DID NOT HAPPEN IN THE BOOK\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Another said<\/a>: \u201cThe <\/span>summer solstice<\/span> already passing\u2026 that\u2019s quite a big change they just made,\u201d while o<\/span>ne more added<\/a>: \u201cOkay but what do they mean the <\/span>summer solstice<\/span> passed like.<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n The episode is left on a cliffhanger as the Naiad warns Percy that war is coming \u2013 but he refuses to give up on his quest as he knows that\u2019s just the beginning of Hades\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n [squirrel-affiliate-playlist squirrel_playlist_id=\u201d608\u2033 \/]<\/p>\n Previously chatting to RadioTimes.com<\/a> about how he decided on what to keep in from the books, Riordan revealed that there were some essential parts \u2013 including Percy\u2019s unique personality.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cI think the challenge was keeping the essence of the story true, making it feel like a Percy Jackson adventure.<\/p>\n \u201cSometimes, when you\u2019re changing media, you have to change things to keep them the same. You can\u2019t do the same things on a screen that you can in a book and vice versa.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re in Percy Jackson\u2019s point of view the entire time in The Lightning Thief novel. You can\u2019t really do that the same way on the screen, so we had to find a different way of conveying his snark, his sarcasm, his sense of humour, his disbelief at what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was essential to keep, but we had to do it in a different way, by showing his emotions on screen a little bit differently \u2013 and multiple points of view.\u201d<\/p>\n Percy Jackson is available to watch on Disney Plus.
