ITV drama After the Flood<\/a> delivered a twist that would feel at home in Line of Duty<\/a>, as the mystery thriller barrelled towards its conclusion.<\/p>\n

Waterside\u2019s police force was confirmed to have been compromised due to several corrupt personnel, one of whom had personally murdered Daniel Eden, and had overseen the murder of car park manager Chris Robinson \u2013 leaving Jo Marshall in an impossible position, given her own misdemeanours.<\/p>\n

After the Flood ending explained<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It emerged that Phil Mackie, who had long been accepting illegal payments while on the job, was responsible for murdering Daniel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The police sergeant had smacked him with a plank of wood following comments he\u2019d made about his politician wife Sarah\u2019s affair with property developer Jack Radcliffe.<\/p>\n

Sarah and Jack were also present as the life drained from Daniel\u2019s eyes, as was Lee Ellison, who had previously been fostered by Mackie and his wife, and Pat, Jo\u2019s detective husband and the father of her child.<\/p>\n

Pat had also been \u201con the take\u201d for years. He explained to his wife that when he was a humble PC, there was one particular case involving a kid from a \u201cgood family\u201d who had gotten himself into trouble.<\/p>\n

Mackie persuaded Pat to let the case go rather than ruin his life, which he felt made sense at the time. But he later received a payment from the boy\u2019s family, \u201cand refusing it was not an option\u201d.<\/p>\n

From there, the payments continued to roll in from various other cases, with Pat claiming he was powerless to resist. Over the years, he accepted more than \u00a320,000, which he had placed into a savings account for when the couple started a family.<\/p>\n

But that wasn\u2019t the only staggering revelation. Pat revealed that Jo\u2019s late dad, who was also a detective, had bent the rules to suit his agenda\u00a0 \u2013 although he said her father only did it to \u201cnail the ones who needed taking down, the ones who always get away with it\u201d.<\/p>

On the night of Daniel\u2019s death, the group had gathered to discuss the insurance scam that involved Jack\u2019s \u201cstolen\u201d farming equipment, which Daniel and Lee would oversee the shipment of, with assistance from Mackie and Pat, who would ensure that there was no police interference.<\/p>\n

Pat\u2019s brother-in-law Keith, who worked in the import and export business, wasn\u2019t present, but was also involved.<\/p>\n

Jack had run out of money and desperately needed the insurance payout to complete the building of his new housing development, which Jo\u2019s mum Molly had discovered didn\u2019t comply with key eco guidelines designed to protect the town from flooding.<\/p>\n

With help from Sarah, his woman on the inside, who had recently been selected to run in the local by-election, Jack had also acquired permission to build another development, even though the first one wasn\u2019t up to scratch.<\/p>\n
