Who doesn\u2019t love a good Shakespeare retelling? The \u201990s and \u201900s rom-com may have been their heyday (think She\u2019s The Man, 10 Things I Hate About You etc), but now you have the chance to catch one live on stage: the new production of the 1948 musical Kiss Me, Kate.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019re new to the musical, Cole Porter\u2019s classic is a Shakespearean romp with a double-edged soundtrack. Following the behind-the-scenes action of a musical production of Shakespeare\u2019s Taming of the Shrew, the story follows Fred and Lilli, a divorced couple playing the lead roles in the play.<\/p>\n
As you can expect, many romantic entanglements, dramas and bickering ensue, threatening to transform Shakespeare\u2019s comedy into a tragedy. After all, the course of true love never did run smooth.<\/p>\n
Kiss Me, Kate is widely seen as one of composer Cole Porter\u2019s greatest scores, filled with his characteristic quick wit and clever wordplay, as well as elements of classical music for songs taking place on the Shakespearean stage, and jazz and Broadway numbers taking place behind the scenes. It\u2019s no surprise that this spectacular show holds a Tony Award for Best Musical.<\/p>\n
Fans of the stage and screen will be delighted to see some familiar faces in this production, with actor Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty, Ridley) and Broadway legend Stephanie J Block (Into the Woods, 9 to 5) taking the two lead roles. This will be Dunbar\u2019s theatre debut and Block\u2019s West End debut, but they\u2019ll both be safe in the hands of acclaimed director Bartlett Sher (The King and I, To Kill a Mockingbird).<\/p>\n
