The hugely popular Korean series will be back on the streamer before 2024 is over. <\/p>
It\u2019s already been over two years since South Korean Netflix series Squid Game<\/a> became a surprise global phenomenon \u2013 but it looks like the long wait for a follow-up could be at an end in the not so distant future.<\/p>\n Writing in a letter to its shareholders this week, Netflix appeared to confirm that the second season of Hwang Dong-hyuk\u2019s show will arrive this year as part of its \u201cbig, bold slate for 2024\u201d.<\/p>\n The second season was listed as one to look forward to, alongside The Diplomat<\/a> season 2, Bridgerton<\/a> season 3 and new shows such as 3 Body Problem, Griselda and Eric.<\/p> And while no exact release date has been announced, the fact that it is confirmed to arrive before the year is out will no doubt be cause for celebration among fans.<\/p>\n The show was officially renewed in June 2022 and filming for the second season began last summer, with star Lee Jung-jae teasing to Ilgan Sports that it would be \u201cbigger in scale\u201d than the first run (via Collider<\/a>).<\/p>\n It\u2019s yet to be seen what the plot of the new outing will be, but\u00a0speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> back in October 2021, writer and director Hwang said<\/a> that the second season of Squid Game\u00a0presented challenges.<\/p>\n \u201cI do realise there are huge expectations for season 2,\u201d he said. \u201cI keep asking myself whether I can make it better than season 1. I do not want people to get disappointed over the new season.\u201d<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n The first instalment was a monumental hit in terms of both reviews and viewing figures, with the series quickly becoming Netflix\u2019s most-watched of all time and earning a host of awards and nominations.<\/p>\n It also spawned a reality spin-off titled Squid Game: The Challenge<\/a>, which debuted in November and gave 456 players the chance to compete for a multi-million dollar cash prize by participating in games from the show \u2013 albeit with less deadly consequences.<\/p> \n
