{"id":4542,"date":"2021-09-17T13:32:22","date_gmt":"2021-09-17T11:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1354728"},"modified":"2021-09-17T14:02:11","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T12:02:11","slug":"help-viewers-broken-by-thought-provoking-channel-4-covid-drama","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/help-viewers-broken-by-thought-provoking-channel-4-covid-drama\/","title":{"rendered":"Help viewers \u201cbroken\u201d by \u201cthought-provoking\u201d Channel 4 COVID drama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> The one-off special takes viewers inside a care home at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By David Craig\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 17 September 2021 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n<p>Viewers of Channel 4\u2019s <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/help-release-date-channel-4\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Help<\/a> are still processing the events of the hard-hitting coronavirus drama, which follows the story of a carer and one of her closest patients during the early days of the pandemic in March 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) plays Sarah, a carer at Liverpool\u2019s fictional Bright Sky Homes, who works particularly closely with early onset Alzheimer\u2019s sufferer Tony (Line of Duty\u2019s Stephen Graham).<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s success with Tony both improves his quality of life and restores her own self-belief, but when the pandemic begins tearing through care homes in the UK, staff are pushed to their limits as they desperately attempt to protect their patients.<\/p>\n<p>The drama received glowing praise from critics \u2013 including a four-star rating in\u00a0<a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>\u2018s <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/help-channel-4-review-comment\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Help review<\/a> \u2013 and audiences had a similarly strong reaction.<\/p> <p>We asked our readers to weigh in with their thoughts on the one-off drama, written by superstar Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials), and they were unanimous in their positivity.<\/p>\n<p>Debbie B Spence tweeted that the feature-length programme was \u201cbrilliant\u201d and added that it was \u201cgreat to see so many excellent Northern actors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Anne-Marie Wright said that she was \u201ctotally broken\u201d by the drama. \u201cI felt grief, rage, fear and moments of pure joy,\u201d she tweeted. \u201cHelp was superb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Fryman also expressed \u201canger\u201d over the suffering of care home patients and staff, while another <strong>RadioTimes.com <\/strong>reader described Help as an \u201coutstanding and thought-provoking piece of television\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Care Workers\u2019 Charity, which supports current and former care workers by providing crisis grants, gave the programme its full support.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"&quot;css-901oao\">\u201cAs the UK\u2019s Charity for the <\/span><span class=\"&quot;r-18u37iz&quot;\">#socialcare<\/span><span class=\"&quot;css-901oao\"> workforce, we are proud to see <\/span><span class=\"&quot;r-18u37iz&quot;\">#socialcare<\/span><span class=\"&quot;css-901oao\"> workers being represented in this incredible drama,\u201d the organisation shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Criticism of the programme was minimal, although Siobhan O\u2019Neill did feel that Thorne\u2019s ending was \u201cstretching believability and detracted from the impact up to that point\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, she agreed that Comer, Graham and their co-stars are \u201cexceptional actors\u201d, while also praising the direction from Marc Munden, who previously worked with Channel 4 on Utopia and National Treasure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Help is available to stream on All 4.
