Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall address the story’s most controversial and unexpected moment. <\/p>

For those of you who have read David Nicholls\u2019s One Day<\/a> or watched the 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, you would have been primed and ready for what happens in the penultimate episode of the Netflix<\/a> series \u2013 although prior warning doesn\u2019t make it any less distressing or cruel.<\/p>\n

For those who hadn\u2019t, well, you\u2019re probably still processing what you\u2019ve just witnessed.<\/p>\n

Newcomers to the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, two vastly different individuals who meet on the evening they graduate from university and become a fundamental part of one another\u2019s lives, will likely have a bone to pick with Nicholls, also.<\/p>\n

Be warned \u2013 major One Day spoilers ahead.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 15th July 2002, Emma and Dexter begin that particular St Swithin\u2019s Da<\/span>y with an argument after she discovers that she\u2019s not pregnant.<\/p>\n

But eventually, after some pointed back and forth, their squabble peters out, and they go about their days as normal \u2013 Dexter heading to the caf\u00e9 while Emma sits down at her laptop to write.<\/p>\n

Unable to concentrate, she rings Tilly to vent further, before taking herself to the local lido, where she\u2019s able to shake off her disappointment, for the time being at least.<\/p>\n

Emma then cycles to meet Dexter at the property they\u2019ve arranged to view \u2013 the next big milestone in their life together.<\/p>\n

But she doesn\u2019t arrive.<\/p>\n

While Dexter waits for her on the doorstop, having not long listened to the voicemail she\u2019d left, tragedy strikes when Emma is struck by a car en route and dies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is quite shocking,\u201d Ambika Mod (Emma) said to RadioTimes.com<\/a> of the controversial moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think also especially in that period, and that chapter of the book and that episode, you\u2019re sort of lulled into a false sense of security, so it does come as a bit of a shock. I know it does make a lot of people angry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo Woodall, who stars as Dexter, added, \u201cBut it ends so wholesomely that I don\u2019t think people will feel too robbed,\u201d with Mod going on to say that it\u2019s \u201cnecessary for Dexter\u2019s arc and the way the story ends\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts with her story and it ends with his, which I think is a really beautiful progression,\u201d she explained.<\/p>

Unlike the book\u2019s first adaptation, which wraps up in a fairly breezy 1 hour 47 minutes, the Netflix series has a hefty 14 parts, which Mod described as \u201ca much bigger challenge\u201d than projects she\u2019s worked on previously.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust the scope and the breadth and the length of the series,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd how much stuff we would have to do, and ageing up characters over 20 years, and the stuff they go through, definitely felt like a much bigger challenge than what I\u2019ve done before.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that was exciting and terrifying in equal measure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodall added: \u201cWe both knew it was a mountain to climb. But it\u2019s such a beautiful story, and we both auditioned four or five times, so by the time we\u2019d started filming, we were so immersed in it already. So it was a lovely new challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n
