{"id":4558,"date":"2021-09-17T15:55:21","date_gmt":"2021-09-17T13:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1354866"},"modified":"2021-09-17T16:11:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T14:11:09","slug":"sex-educations-mimi-keene-discusses-unseen-side-of-mean-girl-ruby","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/sex-educations-mimi-keene-discusses-unseen-side-of-mean-girl-ruby\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex Education\u2019s Mimi Keene discusses unseen side of \u201cmean girl\u201d Ruby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Fans are likely to connect with the character more than ever before. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By David Craig\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 17 September 2021 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n<p>Sex Education star Mimi Keene has opened up about the unexpected direction so-called \u201cmean girl\u201d Ruby Matthews takes in the show\u2019s third season, which sees her step into a more sympathetic light.<\/p>\n<p>When the series debuted back in 2019, even Keene admitted to viewing her character in \u201cone way\u201d, starting out as a mean and selfish rival to protagonists Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey).<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/comedy\/sex-education-season-3-release-date\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Sex Education<\/a> season two, we learnt that her spiky persona is a defence mechanism hiding a difficult home life, where her father is living with serious health condition multiple sclerosis (also known as MS).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a> for <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tag\/the-big-rt-interview\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">The Big RT Interview<\/a> (available in full online from tomorrow), Keene opened up about her initial reaction to Ruby\u2019s rollercoaster journey in season three.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">\u201cWhen I read this season, she got to open up and you got to see her vulnerable side and see the way that she truly is,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe way that she\u2019s portrayed herself is sort of like a facade almost, until this point.\u201d<\/span><\/p> <p>The star confirmed that we will see more of Ruby\u2019s personal life in the new episodes \u2013 including more than one surprise reveal \u2013 adding that this allowed a deeper exploration of why the Moordale student acts the way she does.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\">She continued: \u201cBeing able to show someone\u2019s home life gives you way more opportunities to delve into that character. So for me, that was probably one of the most challenging parts, because she\u2019s very embarrassed of who she is.
