{"id":4570,"date":"2021-09-17T23:30:14","date_gmt":"2021-09-17T21:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1354928"},"modified":"2021-09-17T23:48:07","modified_gmt":"2021-09-17T21:48:07","slug":"the-north-water-writer-on-ships-murder-suspects-none-of-them-are-heroes","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/the-north-water-writer-on-ships-murder-suspects-none-of-them-are-heroes\/","title":{"rendered":"The North Water writer on ship\u2019s murder suspects: \u201cNone of them are heroes\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> A gruesome death stokes up distrust on the ill-fated Volunteer. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By David Craig\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 17 September 2021 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n<p>The writer-director of dark period drama The North Water has teased that no one aboard its grim whaling ship is a hero, after one crew member mysteriously turns up dead.<\/p>\n<p>Set in the 1850s, the series unfolds primarily from the perspective of disgraced military surgeon Patrick Sumner (Jack O\u2019Connell), who gets more than he bargained for after accepting a job on The Volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>In tonight\u2019s episode of <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/the-north-water-release-date-bbc\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">The North Water<\/a>, Summer is horrified to discover that vulnerable cabin boy Joseph Hannah (Stephen McMillan) has been sexually assaulted by someone aboard the ship.<\/p>\n<p>Refusing to name his attacker out of fear, he later turns up dead inside an oil barrel having been strangled, with the killer still at large somewhere on the boat as it ventures further and further away from civilisation.<\/p>\n<p>There are no shortage of suspects who could be responsible for the despicable crime, as The North Water writer-director Andrew Haigh teases in an exclusive interview with\u00a0<a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p> <p>\u201cIn many ways, you imagine this is a story about a hero that finds redemption and of course it isn\u2019t that at all,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s about a bunch of men and none of them are heroes, and actually it becomes about pure survival, more than it becomes about some search for redemption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Colin Farrell\u2019s <a href=\"\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/colin-farrell-the-north-water-transformation-newsupdate\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">barbaric harpooner Henry Drax<\/a> is likely to top the list of potential culprits for many viewers, there is also uncertainty over the captain\u2019s right-hand man Michael Cavendish (Sam Spruell), who Hannah seems terrified by in a grilling before his death.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the small matter of Drax\u2019s claim that he saw ship carpenter McKendrick making advances on Hannah days earlier, but there\u2019s understandable doubt over whether his testimony can be trusted.<\/p>\n<p>Haigh added: \u201cThey\u2019re not on some grand mission to discover the northwest passage, they\u2019re not hunting for the biggest whale in the sea.
