{"id":45737,"date":"2024-02-12T16:42:58","date_gmt":"2024-02-12T15:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=1990883"},"modified":"2024-02-12T18:56:29","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T17:56:29","slug":"call-the-midwife-fans-worried-for-matthew-as-olly-rix-exit-approaches","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/call-the-midwife-fans-worried-for-matthew-as-olly-rix-exit-approaches\/","title":{"rendered":"Call the Midwife fans worried for Matthew as Olly Rix exit approaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> Could the beloved character meet a tragic end? <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By David Craig\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 12 February 2024 at 15:41 PM<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>Call the Midwife fans are fearing the worst for Matthew Aylward (played by Olly Rix) as the season finale looms, whose life and marriage to Trixie (Helen George) has spiralled out of control in the latest episodes.<\/p>\n<p>Fans had hoped that the Poplar midwife might finally have found her happy ending when she married the wealthy baronet, but their relationship has quickly found itself in choppy waters.<\/p>\n<p>The latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/call-the-midwife-matthew-business-nonnatus-house-newsupdate\/\">shockwave hit in last night\u2019s episode<\/a>, when Matthew was struck from the board of his family\u2019s company after accruing \u00a3250,000 in debt (that\u2019s \u00a33.4 million when adjusted for inflation), resulting in the immediate suspension of his salary.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves Trixie as the sole earner in their family home, which Matthew doesn\u2019t own, while even Nonnatus House could be affected \u2013 as it\u2019s revealed that he failed to sign the deed over to the nuns who live there.<\/p> <p>All these cascading disasters, combined with a stark change in Matthew\u2019s behaviour and personality, have led some fans to speculate he could take his own life in a tragic twist at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Though devastating, it\u2019s a potential storyline that could be used to bring attention to the vital need for men to ask for help and be open about their feelings in a manner Matthew has chosen not to do (suicide remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/blog\/tackling-the-root-causes-of-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the biggest killer of men under 50<\/a> in the UK).<\/p>\n<p>In light of this, one viewer on X (formerly Twitter) urged sympathy for the character\u2019s plight, saying that \u201chis parents have put unfair expectations on him\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I know Matthew\u2019s been an idiot, but I feel sorry for him.
