The filmed adaptation of the hugely popular Wizard of Oz prequel is being split into two parts. <\/p>

The film adaptation of Wicked \u2013 or at least the first half of it \u2013 is shaping up to be one of the biggest film events of 2024, and the first trailer<\/a> for the musical recently debuted during coverage of this year\u2019s Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

The minute-long clip gives fans a glimpse of what to expect from stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande \u2013 who are playing Elphaba and Glinda respectively \u2013 while the former\u2019s rendition of the show\u2019s hugely popular number Defying Gravity is also teased.<\/p>\n

It was announced in late 2022 that rather than being released as one film, the Wizard of Oz prequel would be split into two instalments, with composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz<\/a> having outlined the reasons for this last year during an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t really able to get the whole story into one movie without it being far too long,\u201d he explained. \u201c[But] it did leave some room for exploration that has led to a couple of new songs, and it\u2019s just been a privilege to be able to write with the voices of Cynthia and Ariana in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both parts have been directed by In The Heights<\/a> filmmaker Jon M Chu, while other cast members include the likes of Academy Award<\/a> winner Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.<\/p>\n

Wicked: Part One release date<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It has been confirmed that Wicked: Part One will be released on Friday 27th November 2024<\/strong> \u2013 which means that barring any changes it will arrive in cinemas on the same day as Moana 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That certainly makes it a big day for fans of movie musicals \u2013 could we have an all-singing, all-dancing version of the Barbenheimer phenomenon on our hands?<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, if you\u2019re wondering how long you\u2019ll have to wait after the first film before the second part is released, Wicked: Part Two is currently slated to arrive almost exactly a year later, on Friday 26th November 2025.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s certainly a longer wait than the 15-minute interval between Acts One and Two in the theatre!<\/p>\n

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande lead the cast as Elphaba and Glinda respectively \u2013 and they\u2019re not the only big names to feature in the film.<\/p>\n

Oscar\u2013winner Michelle Yeoh takes on the role of headmistress Madame Morrible, Bridgerton<\/a>\u2018s Jonathan Bailey plays roguish and carefree prince Fiyero, and Jurassic Park star Jeff Goldblum plays the legendary Wizard of Oz.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Tony nominee Ethan Slater plays an altruistic Munchkin student named Boq, Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang plays Glinda\u2019s college friend Pfanne, Marissa Bode makes her feature-film debut as Elphaba\u2019s favoured sister Nessarose and The Greatest Showman\u2019s Keala Settle plays a character called Miss Coddle, who is new for the film version.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Wicked: Part One plot<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first film will portray the events that occur in the first Act of the stage play \u2013 closing with the show\u2019s most famous song, Defying Gravity.<\/p>\n

The official synopsis calls it the \u201cuntold story\u201d of Elphaba \u2013 \u201ca young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power\u201d \u2013 and Glinda, \u201cA popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

It continues: \u201cThe two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlinda\u2019s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba\u2019s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.\u201d<\/p>\n
