\u201cYou could take five years studying him, you could spend 10 years studying him,\u201d he explained. \u201cThere were days where I was like, \u2018I need to actually live in Jamaica for five, six years to get this.’\u201d<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cThere was a day where I was like, \u2018I don\u2019t have enough time to take everything in, the language and the music.\u2019 So the collaboration with the family, and Bob\u2019s friends and all of the Jamaican cast who flew into London on the first few days, everything became a discussion and everything became\u2026 a group thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt really was, it wasn\u2019t like anything I\u2019ve ever done before in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n<\/div>Ben-Adir revealed that he quickly realised he was going to need not just one dialect coach, but a whole language team set up, as well as \u201cJamaican experts everywhere\u201d so that everything could be \u201cdouble, triple quadruple\u201d checked.<\/p>\n
He also explained that he decided it was important to focus less on Marley\u2019s status as a cultural icon and more on his internal life \u2013 allowing him to create a more three-dimensional portrait of who he was as a person.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never played an artist, I\u2019ve never played a musician,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I needed to understand what it means to be a musician.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat does it mean that every day you wake up, and you play and you write, and you think of lyrics? And his life was about creating, you know, so that was that was what was different about it.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not going to help you find the more personal side to Bob, the more intimate side, his vulnerability, his struggles, what he went through, you know, his experience growing up in the ghetto.<\/p>\n \u201cThe iconic thing, that\u2019s where he arrived, I need to understand how he got to where he did.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Ben-Adir\u2019s co-star Lashana Lynch \u2013 who plays Marley\u2019s wife Rita in the film \u2013 explained how taking part in the film allowed her to gain a \u201cdeeper perspective\u201d on Marley, whose music she has been listening to for as long as she can remember.<\/p> \u201cHis lyricism, his level of command of lyrics is just out of this world,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s always fascinated me. And I used to read Bob\u2019s lyrics just as almost like a monologue. Because it\u2019s such good storytelling.<\/p>\n \u201cBut just tying his love story to his life to the moments of the end of his life, it all is so vivid for me now. It literally is like he wrote a biography through his music.<\/p>\n She added: \u201cIt just felt like I was piecing together parts of him that I didn\u2019t know, that I was learning in increments. And now I have like a broader, more fuller version of him through listening to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
