The new period comedy <\/span>Wicked Little Letters<\/span><\/a> tells the tale of a small town scandal in the 1920s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Set in Littlehampton, the film<\/a> revolves around two neighbours: sanctimonious and deeply conservative local Edith Swan (<\/span>Olivia Colman<\/span><\/a>) and rule-defying Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley).<\/span><\/p>\n

Although they were once good friends, a disagreement has turned the pair against one another and, when Edith and other local residents start receiving a string of obscene letters, Rose soon comes under suspicion.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, as a trial ensues, it becomes apparent that not everything is as it seems.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI read it and assumed it was a very well realised conceit,\u201d star Timothy Spall, who plays Edith\u2019s father, Edward Swan, said of the film. \u201cBut it\u2019s not, and I was delighted to find that it was based on truth!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd sometimes you go. \u2018Well course it was\u2019, because these preposterous things often work because you go \u2018Really?’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Wicked Little Letters is inspired by the real-life scandal that rocked the sleepy town of Littlehampton, Sussex, in the 1920s after th<\/span>e real-life Rose Gooding moved there in 1918.<\/p>\n

Rose had welcomed her daughter Dorothy out of wedlock three years before marrying her husband, Bill, which was frowned upon at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Rose soon formed a friendship with her neighbour, Edith Swan, with the pair bonding over their household work. Edith wrote out a recipe for chutney and lent Rose knitting patterns for socks, while Rose lent Edith a tin bath.<\/span><\/p>\n

But their friendship soon turned sour after they fell out over their communal garden, and <\/span>Edith quietly plotted her revenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edith started sending foul-mouthed postcards in Rose\u2019s name, which were filled with obscene language and outrageous accusations. <\/span><\/p>\n

At first, insults ranged from cow and bl**dy, but got increasingly obscene, according to the Daily Mail<\/a>, which covered the case at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Posing as Rose, Edith even wrote to tell her fianc\u00e9 Bert \u2013 who was serving in the British forces in Iraq at the time \u2013 that she had fallen pregnant by another man, causing him to call off their wedding plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edith, who modern day historians suspect had mental health issues, went on to launch a private prosecution against Rose, who appeared before Littlehampton magistrates and was charged with criminal libel in September 1920.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rose returned home after spending three months behind bars.<\/p>\n

But her ordeal wasn\u2019t over yet, as\u00a0<\/span>Edith stuck again, sending letters once more and landing Rose back in court.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rose\u2019s barrister attempted to clear her name, producing the handwritten knitting instructions and chutney recipe given to her by Edith, pointing out that the handwriting resemble the penmanship on the letters.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, despite the efforts of her barrister, Rose was jailed for 12 months with hard labour.<\/span><\/p>

How was Edith Swan caught?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Edith\u2019s web of lies began to unravel shortly after Rose\u2019s second sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n

After Rose was sentenced the second time, Edith penned more obscenities in a notebook and posted it to the police, claiming it was found near the Gooding\u2019s house on a street.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Edith had seemingly been trying to strengthen her case against Rose, it ended up having the opposite effect, with the police identifying<\/span> similarities between the handwriting inside the notebook and the accompanying letter from Edith.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rose was released three months into her sentence.<\/span><\/p>\n

The notebook incident prompted Scotland Yard to send Inspector George Nicholls to investigate the libel case.<\/span><\/p>\n

George asked local policewoman Gladys Moss to watch the Swans\u2019 house from a neighbouring shed, and Gladys witnessed Edith throwing a piece of paper near Violet May\u2019s backdoor. Violent was a neighbour that Rose had previously targeted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edith was put on trial in 1921, but the judge refused to believe she could be capable of using such foul language.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until 1923 that detectives hatched a plan to get enough evidence to convict Edith.<\/span><\/p>\n

They marked a set of postage stamps with invisible ink and instructed the post office to sell them to Edith and so, w<\/span>hen Edith struck again the following June, the detectives were able to trace the letters back to her<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In July, the Lewes Crown Court jury found Edith guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judge Avory respected the jury\u2019s decision and sentenced Edith to 12 months behind bars, but <\/span>reportedly said he\u00a0<\/span>found it unfathomable that a \u201crespectable, clean-mouthed woman\u201d like Edith could be capable of writing such \u201cfilth\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
