The filmmaker is putting a fresh spin on a familiar set-up. <\/p>

A long-standing tradition of the crime genre will be flipped on its head in a new BBC series from Charlotte Regan<\/a>, director of acclaimed indie film Scrapper.<\/p>\n

The new commission, titled Mint, will take viewers inside an organised crime family, but rather than focusing on a \u2018godfather\u2019 or henchman archetype, it will instead focus on often overlooked members \u2013 such as the children, mother and grandmother.<\/p>\n

The eight-part drama is described as \u201ca story about the love, darkness, humour, heartbreak and plain weirdness of living alongside that world\u201d and will also explore what happens when these underestimated figures are shunted into the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Writer and director Regan said: \u201cMint is a world I\u2019ve been thinking about for such a long time. It\u2019s the project that\u2019s stuck with me endlessly and I could never get it out of my head. I\u2019m so excited to be making it with the legends at the BBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t wait to meet some magical humans and make some magical TV.\u201d<\/p>

No casting has been announced just yet, but we\u2019ll provide updates as they come in.<\/p>\n

Regan has been dubbed a rising star following her feature debut, Scrapper<\/a>, which starred Harris Dickinson (A Murder at the End of the World<\/a>) as an estranged father who crashes into the life of his young daughter, Georgie (Lola Campbell).<\/p>\n

The film was a major contender at last year\u2019s British Independent Film Awards, with Scrapper\u2019s executive producer Theo Barrowclough also on board for Mint.<\/p>\n

He commented: \u201cCharlotte has found another entirely authored and compelling story in Mint, which has all of the humour and emotional truth that audiences love about her work, alongside a darker edge.<\/p>\n

Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, added: \u201cMint is a crime drama like no other from the brilliant mind of Charlotte Regan and the teams at Fearless Minds and House Productions.<\/p>\n
