The second part of the epic sci-fi adaptation has made a few alterations from the source novel. <\/p>

Any book-to-screen adaptation is going to take a few liberties when it comes to faithfully recreating the source material \u2013 especially when you\u2019re dealing with a novel as dense and detailed as Frank Herbert\u2019s sci-fi classic Dune.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s therefore no surprise that director Denis Villeneuve has opted to change a few things for the second part of his epic retelling of the story, which has now arrived in UK cinemas to a wave of hugely complementary reviews<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But, speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a> ahead of the film\u2019s launch, the director explained that the changes he had<\/em> made were designed to more fully serve the aims Herbert originally had when writing the book.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a true adaptation in the sense that it\u2019s like my take on the book,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there are strong decisions that were made in order to bring this adaptation to the screen \u2013 these decisions have been made in order to be faithful to Frank Herbert.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo in some strange way, my goal was to be faithful to Monsieur Herbert and less to the book, more to Frank\u2019s vision.\u201d<\/p>

He added that he was \u201cabsolutely confident\u201d in the changes that he had made and said there had been \u201cno hesitation\u201d from him and co-writer Jon Spaihts when deciding what to discard from the book and what to keep.<\/p>\n

One change that was made from the novel was expanding the role of Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), in part due to the decision not to include the character of Alia, who instead remains unborn throughout the film (although she does communicate with Jessica from the womb).<\/p>\n

Asked if he partly made this choice so that Ferguson would have more to do, Villeneuve responded: \u201cI didn\u2019t do this for Rebecca.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, it\u2019s an incredible pleasure for me to work with Rebecca, because she\u2019s an amazing actress\u2026 but it was more importantly, as I said before, to be faithful to Frank Herbert.<\/p>\n
