After accumulating company debt<\/a> well in excess of \u00a3250,000, Matthew was stripped of his seat on the board and his salary was stopped, leaving them to survive on Trixie\u2019s income alone. And to add insult to injury, key assets belonging to Aylward Estates, such as his car<\/a>, were also repossessed.<\/p>\n But there was a possible lifeline.<\/p>\n One of his friends from school, who lives in New York, offered Matthew an opportunity which could see him build a business empire of his own and in time, regain his former standing, which put an immediate spring in his step.<\/p>\n But \u2013 and it\u2019s a sizeable caveat \u2013 his new partnership required him to move to the States \u2013 and that\u2019s exactly what he did, with Jonty in tow, in the penultimate episode.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n Trixie wasn\u2019t ready to join him, however, and remained in Poplar, where her mental health continued to deteriorate as she turned to caffeine tablets<\/a> to fight off her crippling fatigue following sleepless nights \u2013 which resulted in her accidentally setting herself on fire while at work.<\/p>\n But after a conversation with her brother Geoffrey<\/a>, in which he encouraged her to \u201crun towards\u201d Matthew, Trixie made the decision to join him across the pond, which was music to her husband\u2019s ears.<\/p>\n Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a> about the couple\u2019s arc across the season, Olly Rix said: \u201cI think they\u2019re both sympathetic characters. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a villain here. But they just diverge in all the worst ways.<\/p>\n \u201cAs an outsider, if you were watching somebody\u2019s marriage during this, you\u2019d be tearing your hair out and saying, \u2018Oh God, please go to therapy, please talk it through, you can save this.\u2019 And every attempt they make, every well-meaning sincere attempt they make, somehow makes it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n Helen George added: \u201cAnd because of the time period, he feels the pressure and the need to take the responsibility for fiscal responsibility on without including her. And she\u2019s such a collective, community-driven person that she wants to be involved. She wants to be involved in the decisions and has a very modern outlook on this idea of a relationship.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s very much into the notion of the man solves the problem, I will sort this, and that\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p> But despite their upcoming reunion in the \u2018Big Apple\u2019, we don\u2019t know what the future holds for them.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not forever,\u201d said Matthew as Trixie told him the good news over the phone, which suggests that a joint return to London could happen. And RadioTimes.com<\/a> understands that the door is being left open for Rix to return<\/a>\u00a0in the future<\/p>\n But that\u2019s not iron clad.<\/p>\n When Matthew originally informed Trixie that he was leaving, he did say that while his move would be for three to four months initially, it would turn into a permanent one \u201cif things go well\u201d.<\/p>\n It\u2019s also worth noting that\u00a0RadioTimes.com<\/strong> was told that George isn\u2019t leaving at the end of season 13<\/a> \u2013 so we could see their marriage break down completely, with Trixie once again flying solo. Or, we could see her return for one or two more seasons, before exiting for good to be with her husband in America.<\/p>\n She might even change her mind and decide not to join him in the States after all.<\/p>\n With so much uncertainty surrounding both the characters\u2019 futures \u2013 and what that means for the actors who play them \u2013 season 14 cannot arrive quickly enough.<\/p>\n\n
