\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting it,\u201d said Georgie Glen of Matthew\u2019s financial troubles<\/a>, which placed considerable strain<\/a> on his marriage. \u201cAlthough Miss Higgins has nothing to do with other people\u2019s private lives, as an actor I wasn\u2019t expecting it.\u201d<\/p>\n But Glen did go on to say that Call the Midwife is \u201cnot a fairy story\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s real life, and things happen in real life,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s not beyond reasonable doubt that someone who appears to have plenty of funds [could hit a rough patch].<\/p>\n \u201cYou don\u2019t know who\u2019s swimming commando until the tide goes out. So it\u2019s these unexpected things that make the show real.\u201d<\/p>\n In the season finale, Matthew had already flown out to New York to pursue a business opportunity, leaving his wife behind. But after extensive deliberation, she decided to join him \u2013 although it remains to be seen if she\u2019ll change her mind.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re dealing with a huge challenge and who knows how that will pan out,\u201d said Glen. \u201cThere aren\u2019t happy endings that you can ever take for granted. They may overcome it, they may not.\u201d<\/p> \u00a0<\/p>\n And it wasn\u2019t just Trixie and Matthew\u2019s arc which developed in an \u201cunexpected\u201d way. We also learned that Miss Higgins has a son<\/a>, who she gave birth to when she lived in India.<\/p>\n \u201cApprehension, that was my first feeling,\u201d said Glen of initially finding out what was in store for her character. \u201cBecause nothing like this had been asked of me in the series before.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd it matters so much to me that it is believable and that the audience are carried along with it as well. When the series ended, I came away still with it all inside me, and it hasn\u2019t left.
