{"id":47348,"date":"2024-03-06T21:00:35","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T20:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/?p=2004462"},"modified":"2024-03-06T22:12:52","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T21:12:52","slug":"doctor-whos-tony-curran-reveals-emotional-impact-of-van-gogh-episode","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/radiotimes\/rss_feed\/doctor-whos-tony-curran-reveals-emotional-impact-of-van-gogh-episode\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctor Who\u2019s Tony Curran reveals emotional impact of Van Gogh episode"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"> &#8220;I had some people come up to me and say they were in a really dark place.&#8221; <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Morgan Cormack\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 06 March 2024 at 20:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body> <p>It\u2019s the standout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/doctor-who\/\">Doctor Who<\/a> guest performance that was fleeting but oh-so memorable \u2013 and there\u2019s never a dry eye in the house when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/best-ever-doctor-who-story\/\">Vincent and the Doctor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than a decade on since playing Vincent Van Gogh, actor Tony Curran chatted to <a href=\"http:\/\/radiotimes.com\">RadioTimes.com<\/a> about the lasting legacy of the episode, in which he starred alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/matt-smith-doctor-who-fame-newsupdate\/\">Matt Smith\u2019s Eleventh Doctor<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/karen-gillan-jenna-coleman-doctor-who-newsupdate\/\">Karen Gillan\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Amy Pond.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether he\u2019s watched the episode or any clips back from it, Curran \u2013 who can currently be seen in the formidable role of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/mary-george-sky-cast\/\">King James<\/a> VI of Scotland and I of England in Sky\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/mary-george-sky-release-date\/\">Mary &amp; George<\/a> \u2013 said: \u201cI watched it a while ago with my daughter, a few years ago or something, and she was crying away, bless her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cWe did a video a few years ago, it\u2019s on my Instagram, it was Vincent\u2019s birthday and I do a little \u2018Happy birthday Vincent\u2019 and I pull up the painting that the BBC very kindly gave me as a wrap gift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, it was the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who and I was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/doctor-who-best-guest-star-tony-curran-vincent-van-gogh-comment\/\">voted on <strong>Radio Times<\/strong> as the most beloved guest star or cameo<\/a>. That didn\u2019t go unnoticed. Hopefully in a good way. It was the first time actually, after that episode came out 10 years ago or whatever it was, there was a [phone] number for people living with depression or mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess, as an actor, as an artist, to entertain people, to inform people is great. But maybe, and hopefully at times, to help people is a great feeling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had some people come up to me and say they were in a really dark place and that they\u2019d thought about making some very dark decisions and they watched that episode, it made them cry and it made them contact people who [said] \u2018It\u2019s OK to not be OK\u2019, as it were.\u201d<\/p> <p>The emotional gallery clip of the episode has notched up an impressive amount of views on YouTube \u2013 the most on the official Doctor Who channel \u2013 and commenting on it, Curran added: \u201c26 million [views], that\u2019s very good!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/doctor-who-tony-curran-vincent-van-gogh-return-exclusive-newsupdate\/\">Doctor Who\u2019s Tony Curran would \u201cdefinitely consider\u201d returning<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/drama\/mary-george-tony-curran-king-james-riot-exclusive-newsupdate\/\">Mary &amp; George\u2019s Tony Curran: \u2018It was a riot playing King James\u2019<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The episode was directed by Jonny Campbell and written by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiotimes.com\/tv\/sci-fi\/richard-curtis-vincent-and-the-doctor-inspiration\/\">Richard Curtis<\/a> (Love Actually), who revealed that he penned the script for the episode in tribute to his sister.<\/p>\n<p>During a watch-along of the episode in 2020, Curtis wrote: \u201cSo \u2013 here\u2019s the thing \u2013 the key reason I wrote this episode \u2013 was out of love for my sister, Bindy. She was a gorgeous and brilliant person, 2 years older than me. She loved Vincent Van Gogh and life. She couldn\u2019t have been more full of generosity and joy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut half way through her life she was hit by depression and, intermittently, it hurt her for the rest of her life.
