20 Days in Mariupol has taken home the trophy for<\/span>\u00a0the Best Documentary Feature Film at the Oscars 2024<\/a>, weeks after winning Best Documentary at the BAFTA Film Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n The film documents the attack on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol by Russian forces. <\/span><\/p>\n It was made from news dispatches and footage captured while Ukrainian war journalist and filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov and his colleagues Evgeniy Maloletka, Vasilisa Stepanenko and Lori Hinnant were trapped in the besieged city, and captures the brutality of war for a global audience.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history, and I\u2019m honoured,\u201d Chernov said in a powerful Oscars speech. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut probably I will be the first director on this stage who will say: \u2018I wish I\u2019d never made this film.\u2019 I wish to be able to exchange this [for] Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Chernov continued: \u201cI wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting their lands, all the civilians who are now in their jails.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBut I cannot change the history. I cannot change the past. But we all together \u2014 among you are some of the most talented people in the world \u2014 we can make sure that the history record is set straight and that the truth will prevail. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnd the people of Mariupol and those who have given their lives will never be forgotten.
