The psychological thriller has just arrived in UK cinemas. <\/p>
The idea of two Oscar-winning actresses going head-to-head in a 1960s-set melodrama will be many cinemagoers\u2019 idea of heaven \u2013 and if you fall into that camp, you need look no further than Mothers\u2019 Instinct.<\/p>\n
The psychological thriller is adapted from a 2018 Belgian film of the same name, and stars Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain as two next-door neighbours whose friendship begins to unravel after a tragic incident involving one of their children.<\/p>\n
To say that things become slightly unhinged from that point onwards would be an understatement, and as the film approaches its climax, several shocking twists and turns are sure to produce audible reactions from audiences.<\/p>\n

Warning: contains full spoilers for Mothers\u2019 Instinct.<\/strong><\/p>\n At the start of the film, Alice (Chastain) and C\u00e9line (Hathaway) share a close bond and enjoy a seemingly idyllic existence \u2013 but this being a psychological thriller, that was never going to last.<\/p>\n Right enough, everything dramatically changes one day when C\u00e9line\u2019s son Max tragically falls from a balcony and dies.<\/p>\n Alice had seen the event unfold from her garden and had attempted to prevent it but was too late in her intervention, something which leaves her with feelings of guilt \u2013 especially given that C\u00e9line seems to blame her for failing to avert the tragedy.<\/p>\n Although they initially appear to mend their relationship, Alice soon becomes paranoid that C\u00e9line is out for revenge and is targeting her family, suspicions which it turns out aren\u2019t unfounded \u2013 despite her husband Simon not paying much heed to the warnings.<\/p> This steps up a notch at the birthday party for Alice\u2019s son Theo, who had been best friends with Max, and in the time since his death appears to have developed a much closer bond with C\u00e9line.<\/p>\n At the party, Alice\u2019s outspoken mother \u2013 referred to as Grandma Jean \u2013 is suddenly found dead, and although the explanation provided is that she had forgotten to take her medication, Alice becomes convinced that C\u00e9line had something to do with the death.<\/p>\n As her suspicions increase and evidence starts to mount to suggest that C\u00e9line had <\/em>been involved in Jean\u2019s death, Alice eventually discovers that C\u00e9line has been keeping a large supply of chloroform in a secret compartment of her house.<\/p>\n If viewers were left in any doubt about quite what was in the compartment, the chloroform is labelled in bright, clear letters \u2013 one of many moments in which the film doesn\u2019t exactly trade in subtlety.<\/p>\nMothers\u2019 Instinct ending explained: Shocking spoilers for Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway film<\/strong><\/h2>\n
