Fans of Derry Girls will see Harland in a very different role, as Nell unexpectedly becomes \u201cthe most notorious highwaywoman in 18th century England\u201d, as she embarks on a mission to clear her name.<\/p>\n
In a new interview about the series, Harland has opened up about her character, who viewers may have recognised isn\u2019t dressed in traditional clothing for a woman living in 18th century England.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love the fact that she\u2019s not romantically driven,\u201d Harland told Variety<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s gender non-conforming to the times. She uses male disguises to get further ahead in life.\u201d<\/p>\n The fantasy series sees Nell on an adventure like no other<\/a> as she travels through the English countryside<\/a> and plenty of stately homes on a pursuit to find the truth about who is framing her.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n Being set in the 18th century, Harland previously explained that Wainwright was able to \u201cre-write history\u201d<\/a>, admitting it was \u201csomething lovely\u201d to have in the new series.<\/p>\n In a Q&A \u2013 and warning, there are spoilers ahead now<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Harland spoke about how Wainwright tackled difficult historical topics such as slavery in the series.<\/p>\n She explained: \u201cWith \u00c9ny\u00ec\u2019s [Okoronkwo] character, Rasselas, at the end we discover his true name. He didn\u2019t want to shy away from the fact that Rasselas was formerly a slave.\u201d<\/p>\n She continued: \u201cI love the relationship between Rasselas and Sofia (Alice Kremelberg) and Thomas (Jake Dunn), just that dynamic (of the landed gentry vs the stable boy) and how they saw each other is just fascinating.<\/p> \u201cThe nice thing about this world is I feel like it\u2019s a new world we\u2019ve created, and apart from a throughline of historical accuracy, we can kind of do whatever we want.<\/p>\n \u201cSally, I think, is rewriting history a little bit, and that\u2019s something lovely about the show.\u201d<\/p>\n [squirrel-affiliate-playlist squirrel_playlist_id=\u201d608\u2033 \/]<\/p>\n Renegade Nell is coming to Disney Plus on Friday 29th March.
