Speaking to Radio 4\u2019s Today<\/a> programme, however, Scott was quick to lay out the distinctions between the two characters, explaining that \u201cit doesn\u2019t feel similar\u201d playing them.<\/p>\n He explained: \u201cOf course there are elements\u2026 it\u2019s dark, it\u2019s very dark, and it\u2019s very different to my own genial kind of personality.<\/p>\n \u201cBut it does feel different. I felt like when I was playing James Moriarty that I was playing a villain, and for some reason I really retreat against calling Tom Ripley a villain.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cI think he\u2019s an anti-hero, that\u2019s what I think he is, and I think it\u2019s up to me to make the audience imagine what it\u2019s like to be Tom Ripley, not to be a victim of Tom Ripley. That\u2019s what we should feel like.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWe should empathise with him, and I don\u2019t necessarily think that that\u2019s the job of an antagonist or a villain. Tom is the protagonist in this, and so for that reason I just don\u2019t see him in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n Scott also said of playing Ripley<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s a natural-born killer, he just ends up doing some things out of necessity \u2013 and I think he\u2019s got charm, and I think there\u2019s a sort of vulnerability to the character that I really liked.\u201d<\/p> The new Netflix series, which is arriving on Thursday 4th April, follows Scott\u2019s character Ripley as he scrapes by as a grifter in early 1960s New York, when he is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home.<\/p>\n Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss recently said that he and Steven Moffat would \u201clove to make a Sherlock movie\u201d<\/a>, calling it \u201cthe natural thing to do\u201d but adding that there were difficulties involved.<\/p>\n Ripley will arrive on Netflix on Thursday 4th April.\u00a0Sign<\/a>\u00a0up for Netflix from \u00a34.99 a month<\/a>.
