Sian (Jill Halfpenny<\/a>) has well and truly delivered quite<\/em> the plot twist, so things are only set to get more complicated now that it feels as though the drama<\/a> is notching up for the final episode.<\/p>\n Well, whatever happens, actress Claire Goose<\/a> (who stars as Jessica in the series) has admitted that it\u2019s important to have empathy as we prepare for the fourth and final instalment tomorrow night.<\/p>\n Goose told press: \u201cWhat\u2019s also quite lovely with this show and its take on the genre, is that both Brian [O\u2019Malley, director] and Jill were very keen that they didn\u2019t just want to show \u2018a mad woman\u2019, and that we should have some empathy with Sian towards the end.<\/p>\n \u201cWithout spoiling anything, I love the way the ending is written. Even though Sian does some awful things, you also know it all came from the fact she was deeply hurting.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought there was something really clever in the way that they did that, because it would be so easy just to make her crazy.<\/p>\n \u201cBut audiences are much smarter and more aware of mental health now, and you can see that Sian is struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n While we\u2019ll have to tune in to see exactly what Sian is running from and what her backstory really involves, it\u2019s clear that Halfpenny\u2019s character isn\u2019t just a plain villain in this at all.<\/p>\n As director O\u2019Malley also told press: \u201cWith The Cuckoo,<\/span> I really liked the idea that you could take one of those concepts but understand the woman in question so much more, humanising her to the point where you can feel some sympathy even though she\u2019s the villain. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s what I really wanted to do with this show \u2013 I knew that whatever else happened, by the end of this series I wanted the audience to feel real sympathy for Sian and to understand that while what she did was wrong, she was really suffering as a human being. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t want her to just be the crazy woman in this story, and I think we did achieve that.\u201d<\/span><\/p> From the start, it\u2019s been clear that mysterious lodger Sian has managed to get under the skin of Nick (Lee Ingleby) and Jessica (Goose) as she\u2019s moved in with them, despite protests from Nick over the fact.<\/p>\n Sian seemed to sweep in at just the right time for the family as they moved to the countryside, removed Alice from private school and have had to deal with some money problems \u2013 which Sian seemed to help out with rather conveniently.<\/p>\n But her motives have become all too clear, especially in the most recent episode. But the real question is: how will things end for Sian?<\/p>\n Read more:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n While we\u2019ll just have to tune in to see how things unfold for all involved, Halfpenny has been upfront about how \u201cridiculous\u201d her character is \u2013 but nevertheless had fun getting into role.<\/p>\n Halfpenny told press: \u201cSometimes she\u2019s ridiculous, and it was fun to play somebody like that. But just because she does bad things, it doesn\u2019t mean she\u2019s a terrible person.<\/p>\n \u201cWe know how people struggle with mental health, and Sian is obviously struggling with her version of reality.\u201d<\/p>\n And Halfpenny also echoes the sentiment around empathy for Sian, saying: \u201cIt was easy for me to find empathy with her, because I know that people can completely convince themselves of something if they want it to be true \u2013 they just doggedly follow that idea to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n As for whether viewers will be able to exercise empathy in that fateful fourth episode, time will tell what\u2019s in store for Sian.<\/p>\n![\"Claire](\"https:\/\/images.immediate.co.uk\/production\/volatile\/sites\/3\/2024\/04\/TheCuckoo-ClaireGoose-Channel5-97a335f.jpg?quality=90&resize=620%2C413\" "\\"The")
