New series Baby Reindeer<\/a> is the true life<\/a> tale that has gone from being a one-man theatre show to a full-on Netflix<\/a> production, telling the tale of Richard Gadd\u2019s own case of being stalked \u2013 but also, so much more.<\/p>\n

Across the seven episodes, we follow Gadd in the lead role of Donny<\/a>, an aspiring comedian who works in a pub and offers a free cup of tea to a seemingly vulnerable woman, Martha (Jessica Gunning).<\/p>\n

Soon, a warped relationship is formed, and Donny is faced with a stalker \u2013 which ultimately leads him on a journey of uncovering his own trauma.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s really what Baby Reindeer is all about, says Gadd, who has created, written and stars in the series.<\/p>\n

Chatting exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a> about the series, he said: \u201cI think trauma begets trauma, in a way. I felt it was important to contextualise [Martha\u2019s] plight, just as much Donny\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, I think the easiest way people will receive this show is they\u2019ll say, \u2018Oh, have you seen that stalking show on television?\u2019 I think that\u2019s great because it sells; stalking is a good selling point for the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I think if you look closer at the show, it\u2019s much more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gadd continued: \u201cIt\u2019s not just somebody hiding down a dark alleyway. For me, this show is about trauma.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the characters in it \u2013 indeed, all of the characters in it, from my dad even all the way through to Nava\u2019s [Mau] character, Teri \u2013 they\u2019re all battling with feelings, emotions, traumas and all those things.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Baby Reindeer displays this slice of life where all these different characters come together and almost try to cohabit in this crazy world.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo a lot of it is about trauma, for me, which is why it was important to get that cyclical nature of it \u2013 Donny giving the drink and then receiving the drink.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the surface level, it is a stalking story, but underneath that, it is one that explores the ramifications of trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starring alongside Gadd in the series is Gunning (The Outlaws), who stars as Martha, who revealed more about what she hopes people will take from Baby Reindeer.<\/p>

She told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>: \u201cIt\u2019s really hard to say, \u2018Watch something without judgement,\u2019 when it could be so polarising or complicated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s the kind of thing where people will take sides at all, but I think it\u2019s the kind of thing that people will see is a lot more nuanced than just a headline stalker victim storyline. I think it\u2019s a lot more than that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the way that Richard\u2019s told it, and also how Josephine [Bornebusch] and Weronika [Tofilska], our directors, have shot it so brilliantly, it\u2019s better than I even imagined it to be when I read the scripts. And I thought they were the best things I\u2019d ever read. I just hope people watch it.\u201d<\/p>\n
