Amy Winehouse is getting the biopic treatment in Back to Black<\/a>, a new portrait of the troubled singer from director Sam Taylor-Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n

The movie has been controversial<\/a> from the word go, with some fans fearing that the project could be exploitative, and some saying it\u2019s simply too soon after her death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some diehard Amy Winehouse fans have also been quick to criticise the vocal ability<\/a> of Marisa Abela, who is portraying the singer in the film.<\/span><\/p>\n

A clip was released in March showing Back to Black\u2019s depiction of the process of Amy\u2019s first record deal and writing Stronger Than Me \u2013\u00a0and giving the first look at Abela\u2019s vocals<\/a> \u2013 and some fans were far from impressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the RadioTimes.com<\/a> review is full of praise of Abela\u2019s performance, describing her portrayal of Amy as \u201cat turns funny, headstrong, vulnerable and tragic\u201d.<\/p>\n

So, does Abela do all her own singing, or do Amy\u2019s vocals feature in the film as well? Read on for everything you need to know about the soundtrack.<\/p>\n

Does Marisa Abela do all her own singing in Back to Black?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Yes<\/b>, director Sam Taylor-Johnson recently revealed that Marisa has provided all vocals for the film, having started lessons for the part.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to <\/span>Empire<\/span><\/a>, she said: \u201cWhen we first talked about it, my first question to (Marisa) was, \u2018Can you sing?\u2019 And she said, \u2018I can\u2019t.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cI was thinking, maybe we\u2019ll use Amy\u2019s voice throughout, and we\u2019ll do it that way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe then went off after that audition \u2013 irrespective of whether she knew she\u2019d got the part \u2013 and started training her voice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow she sings the entire movie, beginning to end. I mean, it\u2019s a huge feat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Abela also worked with Winehouse\u2019s original band for the recordings. <\/span>\u201cAmy\u2019s original band got back together, and we all went into the recording studio,\u201d Taylor-Johnson added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDale [Davis] was there, her bass guitarist, and Ade [Omotayo, singer], and we just all stood there and just went, \u2018<\/span>F**k!<\/span> She\u2019s incredible.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t know what to expect. They were just brimming with emotion, because it\u2019s such a multi-layer of feelings for the people who were close to her and worked with her.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cA lot of the times they would just actually show up on filming days when we were filming music scenes, to just sit and experience that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The film\u2019s music producer, Giles Martin, the son of Beatles producer George Martin, recently weighed in on <\/span>the criticism around choosing Abela\u2019s voice over Amy\u2019s in the final edit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge was acceptance,\u201d he told virginradio.co.uk<\/a>. \u201cI remember really early on, I think Marisa is fantastic. I\u2019m really proud of the way we did it. I think people always go, \u2018It\u2019s not Amy Winehouse singing?\u2019 I go, \u2018Well, it isn\u2019t Amy Winehouse singing!\u2019<\/p>\n

Giles continued: \u201cI think she gets the emotion across, and that\u2019s the challenge, in getting the emotion across, the frailty. I think it\u2019s a celebration of Amy, and I think Marisa\u2019s done a phenomenal job of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back to Black soundtrack<\/b><\/h2>\n

Composed and recorded by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the soundtrack features three original recordings from Amy\u2019s debut album, Frank, three songs from her masterpiece Back to Black and a new track, Song for Amy, sung by Cave.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other songs from artists who were an inspiration to Amy \u2013<\/span> including The Shangri-Las, Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan \u2013<\/span> also appear.<\/p>\n
