Springwatch host, zoologist and conservationist McCubbin says we “should feel angry” about the state of the environment. <\/p>

Megan McCubbin has called for the media not to \u201csugarcoat\u201d the issues impacting our environment and to give audiences the right \u201ctoolkit\u201d to be able to take action.<\/p>\n

McCubbin \u2013 a zoologist, conservationist and host of the BBC\u2019s Springwatch<\/a> since 2020 \u2013 told RadioTimes.com<\/a> that she uses her social media accounts to try and engage people, calling these tools \u201ca very powerful platform, when used in the right way\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a tool, the importance of it can\u2019t be underestimated \u2013 and p<\/span>eople do engage, people are interested in learning about these things,\u201d she insisted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think sometimes, actually, the national media \u2013 radio, television programmes \u2013 we kind of sugarcoat things a lot\u2026 and <\/span>the audience knows that, the audience knows when things have been sugarcoated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn social media, you\u2019ve got the option to really hit home with these issues and talk about them, but also talk about the solutions. People could get really engaged and enthused by it and you get action \u2013 people turn up to peaceful protests, they sign petitions. You can really drive people to do something and that\u2019s critical.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

McCubbin added that the media has to \u201cbe honest about the issues\u201d facing our planet, \u201cbecause if we sugarcoat them, nothing\u2019s going to change\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe media has a real role in campaigning and lobbying, but also\u2026 giving all the right perspectives, the different perspectives, letting people make their own decision, but just not sugarcoating so much and giving people the toolkit to say, \u2018OK, this is the situation and here are the options of what we can be done about it.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
