While previous Doctors have come to be known for their signature outfits, like David Tennant<\/a>\u2018s trench coat or Tom Baker<\/a>\u2018s striped scarf, Gatwa\u2019s Doctor is getting various costumes throughout the series to reflect different time periods and planets his Doctor will travel to.<\/p>\n The news came as an exciting surprise to Gatwa, who revealed the costume process in an interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, where he spoke about bookmarking photos from\u00a0Ralph Lauren\u2019s collaboration with Morehouse and Spelman Colleges.<\/p>\n The collection in question celebrated historically Black colleges and universities in the US, and speaking about it, Gatwa said: \u201cThat was the one costume idea I had, because I had in my mind that I was only going to have one costume.<\/p>\n \u201cI went in and showed the producers, and they were like, \u2018This is lovely. What else have you got?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Oh<\/em>.’\u201d<\/p>\n Gatwa reveals that he then worked with costume designer Pam Downe to think of a complete wardrobe for his Doctor, explaining: \u201cShe laid out her sketches on the table, and I saw kilts and skirts and all kinds of gender-pushing, societal-pushing outfits.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Yes, let\u2019s do all of them.’\u201d<\/p>\n Gatwa continued: \u201cThe show is so quintessentially British, and it\u2019s a show that has accumulated the power to reflect where Britain is societally.<\/p>\n \u201cI was like, \u2018It would be really interesting to travel through all the subcultures of Britain that it\u2019s had in the past up to now through his clothes.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cThis character represents the UK in a weird way, almost like Captain Britain. So, how do we tell that story through fashion?\u201d<\/p> So, we very well could be looking at the prospect of the Fifteenth Doctor having more costume changes than all of the previous Doctors combined \u2013 and quite frankly, we cannot wait.<\/p>\n Sure, fashion isn\u2019t a major<\/em> part of the Doctor\u2019s storyline, but what better way to encompass the time period or new planet the Doctor visits than by the clothes he\u2019s wearing?<\/p>\n Read more:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n We already got a glimpse of some of the style to come in the 2023 Christmas special, The Church on Ruby Road.<\/p>\n Gatwa\u2019s Doctor treated us to a brown chequered suit and cowboy hat, as well as an iconic kilt and vest combo that he was seen rocking in the nightclub scene.
