Leading the cast of the new series is Anjli Mohindra, who is known for her roles in The Lazarus Project<\/a> and Vigil<\/a>, as police sergeant Grace.<\/p>\n Described as \u201csmart, capable and by the book\u201d, Grace is sent to the Welsh island of St Jory as a \u2018punishment posting\u2019, but soon uncovers the unsolved case of missing teen Cai.<\/p>\n She\u2019s met with small-town mentalities, a fair share of hostility and some long-held secrets that the St Jory inhabitants don\u2019t seem all too keen to share.<\/p>\n So, it\u2019s safe to say that Grace has to hold her own, but Mohindra admits she took inspiration from some other well-known TV detectives.<\/p>\n Chatting to RadioTimes.com<\/a> about her inspiration for the new series, she revealed: \u201cThere\u2019s an amazing Scandinavian drama, The Killing<\/a>, with a policewoman who I think is so compelling to watch. Obviously, Sarah Lancashire<\/a>\u2019s Happy Valley<\/a> policewoman.\u201d<\/p>\n Mohindra continued: \u201cFor me, with The Killing, it was about seeing a woman who\u2019s not trying to be liked by anybody. With Happy Valley, it was about seeing someone who will not give up \u2013 even if it costs them so much, they just will not give up.<\/p>\n \u201cThose were the two that I always had in the back of my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, many crime drama fans will be all too familiar with 2007 Danish drama The Killing (also known as Forbrydelsen), which was remade as an American series in 2011 starring Mireille Enos.<\/p> The original series, set in Copenhagen, saw Detective Inspector Sarah Lund (Sofie Gr\u00e5b\u00f8l) face a variety of dark crimes in each season, with each episode covering 24 hours of the investigation and Lund being known for her no-nonsense approach to crime-solving, as well as plenty of series twists and cliffhangers.<\/p>\n Happy Valley\u2019s Catherine Cawood is another example of an indomitable female lead in a police drama, having gripped viewers for three seasons \u2013 and, more recently, having taken home plenty of awards and nominations for Lancashire\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n But Mohindra admits that the inspiration for The Red King didn\u2019t stop at the TV, and was also surprisingly left thinking of Jordan Peele\u2019s directorial debut.<\/p>\n She said: \u201cThen, kind of a bit differently, but the film Get Out<\/a>, I thought about that a lot. It\u2019s rare to see a British piece of television or film even really get to the nitty gritty of that thing of being othered by people.<\/p>\n \u201cThat sort of thing that Gruffudd\u2019s character says about Brown women \u2013 awful but so good to see represented, because they exist and it\u2019s about time that people took a look at themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n Read more:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n While we won\u2019t reveal any of the nitty gritty that Grace has to face from the St Jory community, she\u2019s certainly treated as an outsider that many people don\u2019t seem to want to get to know.<\/p>\n So, when Grace goes digging round in an old case, the island\u2019s pagan god and the True Way cult, she\u2019s met with even more hostility.<\/p>\n Speaking more about the elements of her character that she really likes, Mohindra said: \u201cTo meet a character who is so devoted to policing and so devoted to the system is really rare. Grace will not break any rules.
