A new TV series focusing on Sonic the Hedgehog\u2019s nemesis-turned-friend Knuckles<\/a> is landing on streaming service Paramount Plus<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 with Idris Elba returning to voice the echidna after first taking on the role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.<\/p>\n

The series takes place between the events of the second film and the upcoming third big-screen instalment, and will follow the titular character as he trains deputy sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) \u201cin the ways of the echidna warrior\u201d.<\/p>\n

But with the new spin-off now upon us, how long do fans have to wait before the Sonic himself is back for his next big-screen adventure? And will any more popular characters from the video game series be joining the fun this time around?<\/p>\n

Read on for everything we know so far about Sonic the Hedgehog 3.<\/p>\n

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s been confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog will be released just in time for Christmas \u2013 on Friday 20th December 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s roughly two-and-a-half years after the second film in the franchise was released in April 2022.<\/p>

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 cast<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Most of the actors who have starred in the last two Sonic films are back for this one \u2013 including Ben Schwartz<\/strong> as the voice of the beloved hedgehog, Idris Elba<\/strong> as Knuckles and video game star Colleen O\u2019Shaughnessey<\/strong> as Tails.<\/p>\n

And there is one big name addition to the voice cast \u2013 with The Matrix<\/a> and John Wick star Keanu Reeves<\/strong> joining as antagonist Shadow the Hedgehog, who made a brief non-speaking appearance in the post-credits scene of the previous film.<\/p>\n

As for human characters, Jim Carrey<\/strong> is back as Sonic\u2019s arch-nemesis Dr Robotnik, while James Marsden<\/strong> and Tika Sumpter<\/strong> reprise their roles as his adoptive parents Tom and Maddie Wachowski, and Lee Majdoub<\/strong> and Tom Butler<\/strong> are also back.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile there are new \u2013 as yet undisclosed \u2013 roles for Krysten Ritter<\/strong> (Breaking Bad),\u00a0Sofia Pernas<\/strong> (The Brave),\u00a0Cristo Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong> (Ted Lasso),\u00a0James Wolk<\/strong> (Watchmen) and Jorma Taccone<\/strong> (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.)<\/p>\n

What is the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 plot?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

No specific plot details have been officially unveiled at this stage, but it looks like the film will see Sonic and his allies go up against Shadow \u2013 a legendary character from the video games who was created in a secret government programme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, it seems likely that we\u2019ll get to see Sonic go \u201cSuper Sonic\u201d in this film, after that concept from the games was introduced at the end of the previous instalment, while it\u2019s unclear whether any of the events of the aforementioned Knuckles TV spin-off will feed into the film.<\/p>\n

Is there a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Although some footage from the threequel was shown to attendees at CinemaCon in April 2024, a trailer for the film has not yet been officially released to the public.<\/p>\n
