Doctor Who returns to our screens in May \u2013 and at least a few of the upcoming episodes have been in the mind of showrunner Russell T Davies for quite some time.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the London launch of the new season, Davies revealed that aspects of two-part finale The Legend of Ruby Sunday\/Empire of Death have been brewing for decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s stuff in the finale that I must have been thinking of for 40 or 50 years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Though not reaching quite as far back, episode 5 \u2013 the curiously-titled Dot and Bubble \u2013 has also had a lengthy gestation period, with Davies explaining that he first devised the concept for that particular story around 14 years ago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cEpisode five \u2013 I remember talking to Steven Moffat about that in around about 2010\u2026 and we couldn\u2019t have afforded it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Davies \u2013 who originally served as head writer\/executive producer between 2005 and 2010 \u2013 didn\u2019t develop his \u201cvague idea\u201d any further, as he felt at the time it couldn\u2019t be achieved on Doctor Who<\/a>\u2018s budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you see it, you\u2019ll go, \u2018Oh yeah I see what you mean\u2019 \u2013 visually, it has more effects than any other episode.\u201d<\/p>

The new season follows 2023 Christmas special \u2018The Church on Ruby Road<\/a>, which saw Ncuti Gatwa make his Doctor Who debut proper alongside new companion Millie Gibson, playing Ruby Sunday.<\/p>\n

The festive episode teased the mysterious identity of a hooded figure<\/a> \u2013 the birth mother of Ruby \u2013 with Michelle Greenidge (who plays Ruby\u2019s adoptive mother Carla) hinting to RadioTimes.com<\/a>\u00a0that she knows how the story arc will resolve<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI might know the answer to that!\u201d she said. \u201cWhat I will say is, when the series airs\u2026 I don\u2019t think the audience are going to be ready. It is incredible. The story arc, the writing\u2026 you\u2019ll be gripped. I\u2019m so ecstatic with how things have played out.\u201d<\/p>\n
