Well, the show\u2019s<\/a> stars Arthur Hughes, who plays Matthew Shardlake, and Anthony Boyle, who plays Jack Barak, have spoken exclusively with RadioTimes.com<\/a>, and assured fans that it\u2019s a \u201cpretty faithful retelling of the book\u201d.<\/p>\n Hughes explained: \u201cI think one notable difference is that Shardlake<\/span> meets Barak much earlier. In the books he\u2019s met in the second book, but his original companion in the first book doesn\u2019t come back \u2013 that\u2019s kind of it. And with Barak, their relationship is, I think, so much more interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n Boyle added that he thinks \u201cBarak\u2019s a more interesting character than the lad in the first book\u201d, referring to the character Mark Poer. \u201cThey butt heads a bit more, it becomes a bit more like a buddy movie, like a cop movie.\u201d<\/p>\n Hughes continued: \u201cExactly, there\u2019s a longer way to go with them, and I think that\u2019s why Barak was brought forward. But other than that, I think it\u2019s like a dark, creepy, like, cop show, haunted house story.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I think that\u2019s really what we\u2019ve done, I think that\u2019s really what it looks like. He sets the story into motion, sending Shardlake and Barak, two unlikely partners, to investigate a murder at a monastery.<\/p>\n Bean also spoke with RadioTimes.com<\/strong> and explained why he took on the role of Cromwell, saying that it was the character\u2019s \u201cmischievousness and his ruthlessness\u201d<\/a> that he found most enticing.<\/p> \u201cAnd also his charm and the pleasure he took is these belongings that [had] been stolen from the church, the relics and the skull of Saint Barbara and the way he handled them,\u201d he explained. \u201cThere was something quite creepy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cAnd I like the fact he was quite a dark character, apparently was quite a humorous man when he wasn\u2019t at work.
