The writer of upcoming BBC One drama Ridley Road<\/a> has spoken about the \u201cdeep bravery\u201d of the series lead character Vivian Esptein.<\/p>\n The \u201960s set four-parter, based on Jo Bloom\u2019s novel<\/a> of the same name, tells the story of a young Jewish woman who becomes involved in The 62 Group \u2013 a London-based anti-fascist movement \u2013 and is selected to infiltrate a neo-Nazi organisation.<\/p>\n The mission eventually brings Vivian face to face with the group\u2019s leader \u2013 and writer Sarah Solemani told Jane Garvey on The Radio Times Podcast<\/a> why star Agnes O\u2019Casey was the perfect person to bring the character to the screen.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was a naivety and an innocence, so she wades into this space which is far too dangerous for her,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n \u201cBut she also has this deep bravery, and that was the casting of Agnes O\u2019Casey, who\u2019s this incredible actress who bought this vulnerability; you\u2019re so terrified for her.<\/p>\n \u201cBut at the same time, this steely strength and the bravery, and by the end of the season, she\u2019s on her own and The 62 Group are out of their depth. But she\u2019s on her own, she\u2019s gone rogue, and she\u2019s going to bring these Nazis down.\u201d<\/p> Solemani also said that she hoped the new series would shed a new light on Britain\u2019s own relationship with fascism, claiming that our own understanding of it is \u201cskewed\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople forget that actually, it wasn\u2019t clear cut that Hitler was this monster,\u201d she said. \u201cAt the time, he was impressive, sexy, he was a sex symbol for women in this country, who looked up to this man who had taken Germany out of the ashes of war and was giving dignity to Europe.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd that attitude carried on much later than we thought. We think of the 60s as being this free, multicoloured, technicolour dream place. But that was much later in the decade, in 68. And in 62, they were still calling it \u2018The Jewish War\u2019, a war that we shouldn\u2019t have got involved with.
