There\u2019s certainly been plenty of buzz surrounding Love Lies Bleeding<\/a> \u2013 and ahead of its release in UK cinemas tomorrow (Friday 3rd May), star Katy O\u2019Brian<\/a> has teased that it is \u201ca queer fantasy film\u201d.<\/p>\n

A follow-up to Rose Glass\u2019s 2022 horror debut St Maud<\/a>, the film is set in small-town New Mexico in 1989, and stars Kristen Stewart<\/a> as a withdrawn gym manager whose life changes forever when bodybuilder Jackie, played by O\u2019Brian, passes through town on the way to a competition.<\/p>\n

Intoxicated by one another, their electric dynamic soon sets off a chain of increasingly disastrous events involving Lou\u2019s criminal family (Ed Harris and Dave Franco).<\/p>\n

Speaking about what drew her to the role, O\u2019Brian exclusively told RadioTimes.com<\/a>: \u201cI mean, I saw an open casting, because they couldn\u2019t find the person to play Jackie, and it was a queer bodybuilder from the Midwest \u2013 and that\u2019s who I am.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then it was, you know, an A24 film and I love their movies, it was Rose Glass and I thought St Maud was excellent, and Kristen Stewart was the other lead and I was like, \u2018Yeah, this is a queer fantasy film.’\u201d<\/p>

She continued: \u201cAnd until that moment, I\u2019d never gotten to play a queer character on screen, so I was like, \u2018Yeah, give me this.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then, when I auditioned and got the call back and got the script, it wasn\u2019t until then I knew everything that Jackie went through and it was, like, terrifying, but I just thought it was the most riveting script I\u2019d ever read and I was obsessed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew that if I didn\u2019t do it, I was going to be super sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Love Lies Bleeding premiered at Sundance Film Festival back in January and was met with rave reviews, with critics heaping praise on Stewart\u2019s and O\u2019Brian\u2019s performances as the toxic and electric couple.<\/p>\n

Speaking about casting the actors, Glass exclusively told RadioTimes.com<\/strong>: \u201c<\/span>It was easy to cast Lou \u2013 well, easy in the sense that, you know, Kristen was the person I\u2019d sort of had in my head for the character from the beginning. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe was the first person we sent the script to and she sort of said yes straight away, which was dreamy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut yeah, Jackie was really difficult to cast, and we spent ages looking and saw hundreds of people, basically, because we needed someone who really physically convinced as a bodybuilder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cAnd it was getting really close to the wire. I think, in the end, we\u2019d already cast all the other characters, and the shoot was just looming and we still hadn\u2019t found Jackie. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then, fortunately, Katy O\u2019Brian saw this tweet that our casting directors put out, and it kind of felt extraordinary that we hadn\u2019t crossed paths with her before.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd obviously she\u2019s perfect for it because she\u2019s an actor. A lot of people we were getting tapes from were none actors and sort of from the sporting world, but didn\u2019t have acting experience, and it\u2019s quite a big dramatic role.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo she had a bit of everything we needed, and she\u2019s not a bodybuilder now but she had competed in the past. And from the point that we cast her, we were shooting two weeks later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
