MyAnna Buring gave her insight on the latest trouble for Kate and Chris. <\/p>

The Responder season 2 kicked off on BBC One and iPlayer<\/a> tonight, revealing that things haven\u2019t been going well for unstable police officer Chris Carson (Martin Freeman) since we last saw him.<\/p>\n

The crime drama has been off our screens for more than two years, so it\u2019s only fitting that writer Tony Schumacher includes a narrative time jump that has moved several characters in unexpected directions.<\/p>\n

Most notably, we learn that Chris and his wife, Kate (MyAnna Buring), whose marriage appeared to get a reprieve in the season 1 finale, have finally separated after years of turmoil.<\/p>\n

In the season 2 premiere, Kate is living with her new partner, Ray Mullen (Warren Brown), while Chris is struggling to take good care of himself in a messy bachelor pad littered with fast food packaging.<\/p>\n

Speaking to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, The Responder co-star Buring revealed that she was surprised to see Chris and Kate\u2019s relations take such a dramatic downturn after the hope that viewers were left with at the end of the previous run.<\/p>

\u201cI was [surprised], but also, I thought it was an interesting choice,\u201d she explained. \u201cI think the storyline that was more interesting for [Tony Schumacher, writer] to explore was this idea of \u2018what\u2019s the context that Chris is walking into the world with?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s that his partner and he have \u2013 after years of trying to make their way through the quagmire that his job has created for him \u2013 finally decided to call it quits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buring continued: \u201cDefinitely, Kate is someone who\u2019s gone, \u2018I need to put a stop to this, I need to end this cycle, it\u2019s never going to get better. I need to move on with my life and I need to take care of our child \u2013 and create a future where I know that she\u2019s going to be safe\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor, also known for her work in The Witcher<\/a> and The Salisbury Poisonings<\/a>, went on to say that she appreciated the nuanced characterisation given to Kate, which goes far beyond the shallow, stereotypical \u201cangry ex-wife\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s definitely somebody who\u2019s trying to make it work, who\u2019s trying to be accommodating to Chris\u2019s needs as well,\u201d said Buring, referring to her character\u2019s offer to stay in Liverpool if her ex-husband can find a suitable day job.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think what [Tony] seemed interested in was exploring that reality, which is the reality for so many people who split up with children: How do you move on? How can you be good ex-partners? And that takes a lot of work, a lot of compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buring concluded: \u201cSo I was surprised, but also as soon as my head wrapped itself around what he was interested in looking at, then it made total sense and it wasn\u2019t too far of a leap\u2026 I\u2019m actually surprised Kate stuck with him for as long as she did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another surprise in The Responder<\/a> season 2 is seeing Marco (Josh Finan) attempt to get on the straight and narrow after fathering a child with his new girlfriend; a storyline which, Buring suggests, acts as a \u201cmirror\u201d to Chris\u2019s own parenting woes.<\/p>\n

One more development that occurs between seasons is the passing of Chris\u2019s mother, June (played Rita Tushingham in season 1), which compels the troubled cop to seek out his abusive father, Tom (Bernard Hill).<\/p>\n
