Actress Sophie Stone<\/a>, known for her role in Doctor Who\u2019s<\/a> groundbreaking two-parter Under The Lake\/Before The Flood<\/a>, has called for more deaf representation on TV.<\/p>\n

Stone played Cass in the 2015 Peter Capaldi episodes, a senior officer in an underwater mining facility, and the first deaf character on the show.<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Stone said she\u2019d love to see more deaf characters in Doctor Who, adding: \u201cThere\u2019s definitely room for it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would amazing because in the Doctor Who ones that we did, the TARDIS<\/a> doesn\u2019t know sign language, and I wonder if there\u2019s scope for that to have been inputted \u2013 that eventually the TARDIS would know sign language and the TARDIS becomes the interpreter, or the voiceover.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stone continued: \u201cWhy not? There\u2019s totally room for it. What are we scared of? What are we waiting for?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis summer is changing in the most extreme way for deaf artists. We\u2019ve got Rose Ayling-Ellis doing a detective series [Code of Silence]; we\u2019ve got Genevieve Barr, who has written a series; we\u2019ve got Ted Evans, who\u2019s creating a feature film\u2026 we\u2019ve got Nadia [Nadarajah], who is leading at the Globe playing Cleopatra.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of these things are happening at the same time over the summer and I think once those come out and we\u2019re visible \u2013 we\u2019re there. There\u2019s deaf talent on TV, on stages, being interviewed, being exposed, and there\u2019ll be a buzz \u2013 a pool of actors ready! you have no excuse \u2013 there\u2019s a whole pool of actors to choose from.<\/p>

\u201cI really do believe there\u2019s hope for our current deaf actors and if they get used and their careers [are propelled] then the next generation of kids can watch and see themselves plastered everywhere, and go, \u2018It\u2019s normal, it\u2019s not a token thing, it\u2019s not a one-off special.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Stone also called for better representation of deaf people on TV, praising Doctor Who and adding: \u201cWhat was beautiful about Cass was that she was a full-bodied, rounded character with so many other elements to her. I\u2019d love to see more of those types of stories on screen.\u201d<\/p>\n
