Dame Judi Dench has weighed in on the debate surrounding trigger warnings at the theatre, following earlier comments from the likes of Ralph Fiennes and Matt Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Fiennes suggested that messaging prior to a stage performance warning of upsetting content should be scrapped, arguing that people should be \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cdisturbed\u201d by theatre \u2013 though he added that anything which could \u201caffect people physically\u201d such as strobe effects should still be flagged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doctor Who<\/a> star Smith later joined the conversation<\/a>, saying: \u201cThat\u2019s why we go to the theatre, isn\u2019t it? To be shocked, to be arrested out of ourselves, to recognise ourselves in front and with an audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In this week\u2019s issue of <\/span>Radio Times magazine<\/b>, Dench is quizzed on the topic \u2013 and while she understands the need for these warnings in some circumstances, she too fears it impacts an audience\u2019s experience of watching a theatre production.<\/span><\/p>

She said: \u201cDo they do that? My God, it must be a pretty long trigger warning before King Lear or Titus Andronicus! Crikey, is that really what happens now?<\/p>\n

\u201cI can see why they exist, \u00a0and it is preparing people, I suppose, but if you\u2019re that sensitive, don\u2019t go to the theatre, because you could be very shocked. Where is the surprise of seeing and understanding it in your own way?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy go to the theatre if you\u2019re going to be warned about things that are in the play? Isn\u2019t the whole business of going to the theatre about seeing something that you can be excited, surprised, or stimulated by? It\u2019s like being told they\u2019re all dead at the end of\u00a0King Lear. I don\u2019t want to be told.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dench was speaking to <\/span>Radio Times <\/b>as part of a retrospective on 1980s sitcom A Fine Romance, which is getting a repeat showing on Rewind TV (available on Sky from 23rd May).<\/span><\/p>\n
