John Rebus has returned to our screens for a six-part BBC series<\/a> starring Outlander\u2019s<\/a> Richard Rankin as the Scottish detective sergeant.<\/p>\n

Gregory Burke\u2019s drama, which was executive produced by Ian Rankin, the author of the long-running novel series on which it\u2019s based, follows Rebus in his younger years in modern-day Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

His brother Michael (Brian Ferguson), who is a minor character in the source material, plays a central role here, choosing chaos in an effort to tackle his mounting debts \u2013 which places Rebus in an intensely compromising position, with potentially ruinous consequences.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s full-on,\u201d said author Rankin in an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com<\/a>. \u201cAt certain points, some viewers might even say it\u2019s slightly harrowing. There\u2019s an awful lot of visceral stuff happening. It\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said that even he \u201cjumped\u201d in his seat a couple of times when watching episodes that he had already seen.<\/p>\n
