Back in January 2023, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed that spin-offs would form part of the show\u2019s \u201cnext stage\u201d<\/a> under his stewardship.<\/p>\n Speaking about his decision to return to the series, Davies said: \u201cI thought \u2013 with no criticism whatsoever towards the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within the BBC\u2019s measures \u2013 it was time for the next stage for Doctor Who.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought the streaming platforms are ready, the spin-offs are ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood<\/a> as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures<\/a> as a spin-off.<\/p>\n \u201cThose spin-offs declined when I left, and I can see why. And I very much left after 2008, when the money became scarce. I think that\u2019s fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things.\u201d<\/p> Earlier this month, Davies offered an official update on the planned spin-offs, confirming that \u201cthere are offices that exist now<\/a>\u201d for the development of these new shows.<\/p>\n Now, we might just have got confirmation that one rumoured spin-off is indeed about to materialise\u2026<\/p>\n The opening scenes of latest episode 73 Yards<\/a> see the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) delighted to have landed the TARDIS in Wales. When companion Ruby (Millie Gibson) asks how he can be so certain as to their location, he replies, \u201cThat smell, that green, that coastline\u2026<\/p>\n \u201cRuby, oh\u2026 the rocks and the water, it never ends \u2013 the war between the land and the sea<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n In January 2024, an entry on the website Production List<\/a> \u2013 which posts announcements of new TV and film projects in pre-production \u2013 suggested that a Doctor Who spin-off<\/a>, titled The War Between the Land and the Sea<\/strong>, was in development.<\/p>\n The entry also claimed that the show would feature iconic foes, the Sea Devils. At the time, the BBC declined to comment on this report when approached by RadioTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n Does the Doctor\u2019s line in 73 Yards hint that there might be something to the story? If not, it\u2019s a mighty big coincidence\u2026<\/p>\n Last year, ex-Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat \u2013 who recently returned to the show to pen the acclaimed episode Boom<\/a> \u2013 spoke to RadioTimes.com<\/strong> about potential spin-offs<\/a>, suggesting that there was one obvious candidate to be given the treatment.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s loads of things you can do, there\u2019s loads of ideas in Doctor Who that are good enough for their own show, that\u2019s the truth,\u201d said Moffat. \u201cThe obvious one is UNIT \u2013 why did no one just do UNIT?<\/p>\n \u201cI was always half-tempted to do Jenny and Vastra solving crimes in Victorian London with big swords, I thought that would be quite fun.
