There\u2019s plenty of hype around Alien: Romulus, the seventh instalment in the Alien franchise and the first entry since 2017\u2019s Alien: Covenant<\/span> \u2013 and now we have a new trailer to drum up excitement even more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Set between the events of the first and second films, <\/span>Alien: Romulus follows a group of young explorers in an abandoned research facility.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were talking about, \u2018How could this be a child of the two?\u2019 So we have those heightened moments, but then proper horror,\u201d Cailee <\/span>Spaeny, who plays new protagonist Rain, told <\/span>Total Film<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Director Fede \u00c1lvarez added that it\u2019s a \u201clove letter to all the other movies\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the way this movie works: if you haven\u2019t seen any Alien movie ever, you\u2019ll have a great time,\u201d he told the publication. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou won\u2019t feel like you\u2019re missing out on anything. But if you\u2019ve seen one or more \u2013 oh, boy, you\u2019ll have a blast. At least, I hope you will! The reality is that it is a standalone story, but it\u2019s filled with references to every movie. It is truly a love letter to all the other movies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The new footage teases plenty of blood, screams and some terrifying Facehuggers. It opens <\/span>with shots of abandoned corridors as someone yells: \u201c<\/span>Help! Someone help me, please!\u201d alongside other cries for help.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fans are also given an introduction to Cailee Spaeny\u2019s Raines as she appears in the footage holding a pulse rifle and following in the footsteps of Sigourney Weaver<\/a>\u2018s Ripley in the original 1979 Alien film.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alien: Romulus release date<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The film will be released in cinemas on Friday<\/strong> 16th August 2024.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was initially set to release on Hulu, but then got bumped to a theatrical release.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) is set to lead the cast as new character Rain.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to Spaeny, other cast members include Spike Fearn (Tell Me Everything), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us)<\/a>, Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), David Jonsson (Murder Is Easy) and Aileen Wu (Skin).<\/span><\/p>\n

The original 1979 Alien film<\/a> followed Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley and, s<\/span>peaking about the influence Weaver\u2019s portrayal of Ripley has had on her, Spaeny told Total Film: <\/span>\u201cI definitely did everything that I could to bring that character to life. Watching Sigourney play that role \u2013 she\u2019s part of the changing of the game that those films did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cI could never be her. But I injected whatever I have in me into that character, and tried to make it three-dimensional \u2013 as three-dimensional as possible. So I hope that that\u2019s there, and it comes alive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The movie follows \u201ca group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe,\u201d according to the official synopsis.<\/span><\/p>\n

And if you\u2019re wondering what the title means,\u00a0\u00c1lvarez previously confirmed to TotalFilm that it\u2019s inspired by the myth of Romulus and Remus. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf people aren\u2019t familiar, it\u2019s the creation myth of Rome. Romulus killed Remus,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s not a siblinghood that went down the right path. [Alien: Romulus] is a film about siblinghood. A lot of the character stories are related to siblinghood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
