Squid Game director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said that it took over 10 years for the Netflix series to be made.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, Hwang revealed that he devised the plot behind Squid Game<\/a> back in 2008 and wrote the script a year later, however the show wasn\u2019t made until 12 years later after being rejected by several studios due to its \u201cbizarre\u201d concept.<\/p>\n Speaking to The Korea Times<\/a>, the director said: \u201cBut after about 12 years, the world has changed into a place where such peculiar, violent survival stories are actually welcomed.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople commented on how the series is relevant to real life. Sadly, the world has changed in that direction. The series\u2019 games that participants go crazy over align with people\u2019s desires to hit the jackpot with things like cryptocurrency, real estate and stocks. So many people have been able to empathize with the story.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that he knew Squid Game would either be \u201ca masterpiece or a quirky flop\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThe idea behind this work was very experimental. So I would keep on asking myself if audiences will find it convincing that the characters are risking their lives to play children\u2019s games.\u201d<\/p> Hwang spent a decade pitching the project, which is set to become Netflix\u2019s biggest show ever<\/a>, to several studios, however they found the series \u201ctoo grotesque and too unrealistic\u201d, he told the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n However, after the coronavirus pandemic hit and exacerbated the disparity between the rich and the poor, Netflix thought that Squid Game\u2019s themes of class struggle spoke to reality, Huang said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe world has changed.
