England are aiming for glory at the Euros, but who could they face in the tournament? <\/p>
The start of Euro 2024 is fast approaching, and there is a growing feeling that this could be England\u2019s year.<\/p>\n
After a semi-final exit at the 2018 World Cup, defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, and a heartbreaking exit at the hands of France two years ago, Gareth Southgate is looking to finally end 58 years of hurt and lead the Three Lions to a first major tournament triumph since 1966.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s certainly not short on talent, with the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Declan Rice among the best players at the tournament, but there is a long, long way to go.<\/p>\n

That looks likely to be either Austria, Romania\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0Turkey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If they finish second, they\u2019ll play the winners of Group A (Germany, Scotland, Hungary, Switzerland) in Dortmund on Saturday 29th June. In that scenario, they could be set for an early meeting with tournament hosts Germany<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Were England to finish third and still qualify, they would either be drawn against the winners of Group E (Ukraine, Slovakia, Belgium, Romania), most likely Belgium<\/strong>, in Munich on Tuesday 2nd July, or the Group F (Portugal, Czech Republic, Georgia, Turkey) winners, most likely Portugal<\/strong>, in Frankfurt on Monday 1st July.<\/p>\n Our predicted opponent: Turkey<\/strong><\/p>\n If all goes well, the quarter-finals are likely to be England\u2019s first meeting with another European heavyweight.<\/p>\n Assuming they win the group, that could be\u00a0Italy, Spain <\/strong>or\u00a0Germany <\/strong>in Dusseldorf on Saturday 6th July, while if they come second, it would likely be Spain<\/strong>,\u00a0Italy<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Croatia\u00a0<\/strong>lying in wait for them in Stuttgart on Friday 5th July.<\/p>\n England\u2019s path beyond the round of 16 should they qualify as one of the best third-placed sides can\u2019t be predicted until the group stages are finished, as it\u2019s based on which other third-placed teams qualify.<\/p>\n Our predicted opponent: Italy<\/strong><\/p>\n The expectation is for England to at least make the semi-finals, and that could throw up a few opportunities to exact a bit of revenge.<\/p>\n As group winners, the Three Lions\u2019 opponents in the final four would likely be either France<\/strong>, who knocked them out of the World Cup in Qatar, or\u00a0Belgium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If they finished second in Group C and reach the semis, then\u00a0Netherlands\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Portugal\u00a0<\/strong>would likely be the sides standing in their way of a place in the final.<\/p>\n A victory against the latter, to exorcise some of the Golden Generation\u2019s demons, would be particularly satisfying.<\/p>\n Our predicted opponent: France<\/strong><\/p>\n The Euro 2024 final takes place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday 14th July, and if England can make it there, then they will be on the verge of something very special.<\/p>\n Should they win their group, then it will surely be one of\u00a0Spain<\/strong>,\u00a0Portugal<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Germany\u00a0<\/strong>that they face.<\/p>\n If they\u2019re runners-up in Group C, then it\u2019s very hard to see past France\u00a0<\/strong>meeting them in the German capital.<\/p>\n Our predicted opponent: Spain\u00a0<\/strong><\/p> Check out more of our\u00a0Sport<\/a>\u00a0coverage or visit our\u00a0TV Guide<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Streaming Guide<\/a>\u00a0to find out what\u2019s on.
