Shania Twain is playing the prestigious Glastonbury<\/a> Legends slot at this year\u2019s iconic music festival.<\/p>\n

Ahead of her Sunday afternoon performance at Worthy Farm, and with a string of UK and Ireland tour dates this summer including a show at BST Hyde Park in London<\/a>, the singer spoke to Radio Times magazine<\/strong> to discuss her career to date and future plans.<\/p>\n

Is playing the Glastonbury Legends slot an honour, or a Greatest Hits award when you have new music still to make?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I see it as an accolade. Other people who have played the slot, like Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton, are musicians I\u2019m heavily influenced by and look up to. So, it\u2019s definitely an honour.<\/p>\n

How did the gig come about when you\u2019ve never even been to Glastonbury?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019d been hearing about it for years. My manager said, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be surprised if that comes up,\u201d but it\u2019s an invite that feels like a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I was on the edge of my seat until it became a reality. I\u2019m excited but nervous. I\u2019m going as a fan, too: I want to cheer on my fellow Canadian Avril Lavigne, and I\u2019ve never seen Cyndi Lauper or Coldplay live.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve been successful in the music industry for a long time \u2014 how hard was it to navigate when you started out?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I began my career on a live stage so young \u2013 my first gig was when I was eight \u2013 that by the time I got my deal in Nashville, I was fearless about the music industry. I didn\u2019t open myself up to intimidation, but I recognise it is intimidating for most women. The industry is mostly men, not just in the higher positions, but also musicians. Not many women pursue touring band jobs, but we need to show younger girls it\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n

You exerted your independence through your early videos, which made your songs hits\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t a threat or that important yet, so they didn\u2019t over-babysit me, and took a chance letting me do my own thing. It was never in the control of the industry heavyweights, and that was for the betterment of the work.<\/p>\n

Is it easier for women to be heard now and for new voices to come through?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think we can convince people who don\u2019t want us there to change their minds \u2013 it\u2019s about inspiring those coming up to think differently. That\u2019s where change will happen. Taylor Swift has done a really good job hammering away and demanding respect as an artist. She\u2019s someone who I imagine is inspiring others.<\/p>\n

In the 1990s, you made the crossover from country to pop. How do you feel about Beyonc\u00e9 doing the reverse?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My struggles were different. I was taking a giant risk, maybe losing what I\u2019d built up, but I had to go for it. Beyonc\u00e9 already has the status and is using her power to voice a new interest. Everybody has the right to explore whatever they want. I\u2019ll always push my own boundaries. I\u2019m writing a new album and the goal is to show another side of me.<\/p>

How has social media changed your relationship with your fans?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I know so much more about them now. I used to wonder why so many people aged 20 knew the songs from [1995 album] The Woman in Me. Now I know they were kids in the back of their parents\u2019 car learning my songs \u2013 they grew up with me.<\/p>\n

Which new artists excite you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Teddy Swims is an extraordinary vocalist. He covered You\u2019re Still the One and it felt like the song was his.<\/p>\n

You immortalised Brad Pitt in That Don\u2019t Impress Me Much. Who would it be if you recorded the same song now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, Harry Styles is up there \u2013 he\u2019s the Brad Pitt of today.<\/p>\n
