“Why can’t Black people be in a sci-fi\u00a0space?”\u00a0 <\/p>

New Netflix series Supacell follows a group of seemingly ordinary black Londoners who suddenly develop superpowers \u2013 and the show\u2019s creator Rapman has revealed he hopes it will open the door for more sci-fi shows focused on black British characters.<\/p>\n

Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com<\/a>, Rapman \u2013 who previously wrote and directed the hit film Blue Story \u2013 explained how the genre had previously not provided too many opportunities for black creatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you actually look back at UK shows, when have you ever seen a UK sci fi \u2013 not that there\u2019s a lot of them anyway \u2013 but with a Black cast?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd even take out the UK, even going to the States, you could probably think of Black Panther. Or you could probably think of Black Lightning. The buck stops there, let\u2019s be honest, it\u2019s there. And it\u2019s like\u2026 why can\u2019t Black people be in a sci-fi space?\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cSo the hope is that this show does really well and it\u2019s just the beginning. There\u2019ll be others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rapman also explained that the idea for the show came about because he wanted to see a superhero drama that was more grounded in real life \u2013 one where he could \u201cbelieve these characters\u201d and their actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause if I get powers now, I\u2019m not thinking to get spandex, cover my face, and go stop a bridge from falling down,\u201d he said. \u201cI will stop that bridge from falling down, but before I do that, can I quickly just get some money and sort out my life, which is a mess right now. And then I\u2019ll sort that out.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo for me, I never saw anyone doing that \u2013 it\u2019s always like I\u2019ve got these powers, we need to save the world. Like whoa, charity starts at home first, guys. So let\u2019s just sort this out first.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I feel that\u2019s what Supacell<\/span> is, no one is trying to save the world. They\u2019ve all got their own issues, their own problems. And they\u2019re trying to deal with that. No one has even thought about being a superhero right now. So that\u2019s the type of show I wanted to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n
