With the 14th season of Doctor Who<\/a> now having concluded, Russell T Davies<\/a> has revealed how hard it was to work alongside the busy acting schedule of new series lead Ncuti Gatwa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of course, Gatwa<\/a> rose to fame in Netflix\u2019s Sex Education<\/a> as Eric Effiong<\/a> before leading the beloved long-running sci-fi under the direction of Davies.<\/p>\n

But it turns out that if Gatwa hadn\u2019t been as busy filming the final season of Sex Education, an episode like 73 Yards<\/a> may have not happened in his first season.<\/p>\n

Speaking in this week\u2019s issue of Doctor Who magazine<\/a>, Davies said: \u201cI love a Doctor-lite episode. But, let\u2019s face it, if Ncuti had been available, we would never have done a Doctor-lite episode in season 1.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davies continued:\u00a0\u201cCasting Ncuti meant casting him before he\u2019d finished on\u00a0Sex Education.<\/em>\u00a0That was a risk that we took, but it was absolutely the right risk, because it meant we got the best possible Doctor in 2024 that we could wish for.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the marvellous thing was, I\u2019d had this idea kicking around for ages, of the Doctor and his companion stepping outside the TARDIS and seeing someone in the distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I could never make it work with two people. So when it became Doctor-lite \u2013 when it was just Ruby, and we were able to follow her whole life \u2013 it sort of freed itself.\u201d<\/p>\n
